There is no way to recover once the spaces for a date are sold out: the permit does not appear at the last minute, there is no waiting list, and no amount of extra money can get you a spot when the quota is full. At Incredible Peru Tours, we manage Inca Trail permits throughout the year and know the real behavior of the market month by month. This guide gives you that information before you need it urgently.

Why booking time matters more on the Inca Trail than on any other trek

The Inca Trail has a maximum quota of 500 people per day, including guides, porters, and cooks. The actual quota available for visitor groups is approximately 200 people per day. That restriction is non-negotiable and has no exceptions: it is established by the Ministry of Culture of Peru to protect the trail and the archaeological sites from the degradation that uncontrolled tourism caused before regulation existed.

The practical result is that during the months of highest demand, those 200 spaces sell out far in advance. This is not an agency marketing strategy or an exaggeration to create urgency: it is the direct consequence of there being many more travelers who want to hike the Inca Trail in July than available spaces for that month. Anyone who arrives in Cusco in July hoping to book for that same week simply cannot do it.

Limited Spaces on the Inca Trail

Month by month: how far in advance each period of the year needs to be booked

June, July, and August are the months with the highest demand of the year and the ones in which permits sell out the farthest in advance. They are the Northern Hemisphere summer vacation months, the period with the highest tourist flow to Cusco, and the months with the most stable weather of the year on the trail. For any date in those three months, the minimum recommended booking time is four months in advance, while the safest approach is five or six months. In practice, Incredible Peru Tours groups departing in July usually have their permits confirmed between January and February of the same year. Anyone who starts looking in May for July rarely finds availability.

May is one of the best months of the year to hike the Inca Trail and also one of the months that sells out the fastest. The combination of stable weather, fewer visitors than in summer, and vegetation that is still fresh from the recent wet season makes it the favorite choice of many travelers with experience on the route. For dates in May, the minimum recommended booking time is three months in advance, and the ideal is four. Anyone planning to travel in May should start the permit process in January at the latest.

September and October are the transition months toward the wet season and the ones that offer the most booking flexibility without reaching the urgency of summer. Permits for those months are usually available with two or three months’ notice, and in some years even less on the lower-demand days of each week. For travelers with flexible dates within those months, September and October make it possible to organize the trip with less lead time without risking sold-out quotas.

November, December, and January correspond to the beginning and progression of the wet season. Demand drops compared to previous months, and permit availability is greater, with spaces that in some cases do not sell out completely until a few weeks before the date. Two months in advance is generally enough for those months, and during the low season within that period, even six weeks may be viable. However, this does not mean you can leave it until the last minute: there are always groups that book in advance, and the best guides and the best campsites are also assigned in booking order.

February is the only month when the Inca Trail closes completely for official maintenance of the trail and archaeological sites. There are no permits available for any date in February. For travelers whose travel dates fall in that month, the Salkantay Trek is the most complete available alternative: it has no monthly closure and is open all twelve months of the year without regulated quotas.

March and April are transition months toward the dry season, with rainfall gradually decreasing and greater permit availability than during the summer months. For Holy Week, which in some years falls in March or April, demand rises temporarily and the required booking time increases compared to the rest of the month. If your travel dates include Holy Week, it is best to arrange the permit at least three months in advance, regardless of which month it falls in that year.

The exact moment when permits sell out: what real data says

Inca Trail permits for the following year become available for sale starting on October 1 of the previous year, when the Ministry of Culture opens the reservation system for the new season. In practice, permits for the most requested months of the following season, especially July and August, begin to sell out in the weeks immediately after that opening.

For 2026, permits became available starting on October 27, 2025. The spaces for the highest-demand months of 2026 were already in the process of selling out in the weeks following that date. Anyone reading this guide in the first months of 2026 who wants to hike the Inca Trail in June, July, or August 2026 should check availability immediately, because depending on when they read this, they may find very limited options or no availability at all for their preferred dates.

What happens if permits for your dates are already sold out

If, after checking availability with the agency, the permits for the dates you need are no longer available, there are three real options.

The first is to adjust your dates. In many cases, moving the trek start date two or three days forward or backward within the same week can open up availability because demand is not uniform throughout the week: Mondays and Tuesdays usually have more availability than Wednesdays and Thursdays during most months.

The second is to switch to the Salkantay Trek. It is not a consolation second choice: it is a route with its own identity, no regulated quotas, and access on the same dates when the Inca Trail is sold out. For travelers with fixed dates who cannot move them, Salkantay is the most complete available alternative.

Salkantay Trek

The third is to contact several authorized agencies directly to ask whether they have returned permits available. When a participant cancels a confirmed reservation, the permit returns to the system or to the agency that processed it, and in some cases that permit can be reassigned. This is not common and it is not predictable, but during some periods of the year it is worth asking operators that manage a higher volume of groups, or our Inca Trail operating agency, Incredible Peru Tours.

The difference between booking early and booking well

Booking with the right amount of advance notice does not mean booking without verifying the quality of the operator. The urgency to secure the permit before it sells out is not a reason to sign with the first agency that confirms availability without first asking the right questions about guides, porters, and equipment.

The most efficient process is the following: check permit availability with agencies that meet the basic criteria of registration and transparency, choose the one that offers the best quality-price ratio with complete service information, and confirm the reservation with the corresponding deposit once all questions have been answered in writing. That process, even during high season, does not have to take more than a week if you start with enough lead time.

At Incredible Peru Tours, we manage permit availability in real time and respond to availability inquiries in less than 24 business hours. If you have dates in mind and want to check whether there is still availability before committing to any transportation expense, write to us directly with the period you are considering and the number of people in your group, and we will confirm the actual availability with no booking obligation.

The question of how far in advance you need to book the Inca Trail is one of the most important ones to answer correctly.
