It was built over Kiswarkancha, the palace associated with the Inca ruler Huiracocha, and was consecrated in 1654. From the outside, it is one of the iconic views of the square. Inside, however, it is a completely different space: chapels, silverwork, paintings from the Cusco School, and the image of Christ that the city carries in procession on Holy Monday.

It is not included in the half-day city tour. Admission is separate. Mass and tourist visits operate under different schedules and rules.

What stood on this site before the Cathedral

Kiswarkancha once occupied this side of the Inca square known as Huacaypata. After the Spanish occupation, the property passed to the Church. The first Christian building in the complex was not the main cathedral nave, but El Triunfo, built in the 16th century on the site associated with the consolidation of the Spanish takeover of the city. Construction of the main basilica began around 1560 and took nearly a century. To the left, when viewed from the square, stands the later Church of the Holy Family.

Visitors today actually walk through three connected churches, not a single building.

How the Cathedral complex is laid out

From the Plaza de Armas, two towers frame the facade. The Gospel Tower houses María Angola, a bell weighing nearly six tons. It is no longer rung every day and is reserved for major religious occasions to reduce the risk of cracking the bronze.

Tourist access is usually through El Triunfo on Calle Triunfo, along the side of the square, rather than through the main entrance used for Mass. This prevents visitors from crossing the nave during a religious service.

Inside are three naves, side chapels, an elevated carved cedar choir, and a main altar covered in silver. The route is not especially long in terms of distance. Most of the time is spent stopping to look closely at the details.

What to see inside the Cusco Cathedral, and in what order

The Last Supper by Marcos Zapata

This 18th-century painting depicts a guinea pig on the table instead of lamb. Andean elements also appear in the fruit and in the treatment of the figures’ faces. It is more than an amusing detail for a photograph. It is a clear example of the Cusco School interpreting a biblical scene through local food, imagery, and cultural references. Visitors with only an hour inside should make sure not to miss it.

Choir and carved stalls

The elevated cedar choir features intricate carvings of saints and misericords. Ask the staff whether access is available, as independent visitors are not always allowed upstairs. Guided visits are more likely to include it.

Chapel of the Lord of the Earthquakes

This wooden crucified Christ has developed a dark appearance after centuries of candle smoke. In Quechua, the image is known as Taytacha Temblores. It is regarded as the city’s unofficial patron. The atmosphere in this chapel is different from the rest of the Cathedral: quieter, with more offerings and fewer cameras. It is an active devotional space rather than a museum display.

Main altar and silverwork

The silver frontal and other silver pieces strongly shape the appearance of the interior. Lighting inside the Cathedral is dim, and a phone in automatic mode often produces a yellow-tinted image. If flash photography is restricted, the rule should be respected. During Holy Week and Corpus Christi, the decoration around the sanctuary changes, as does the flow of visitors.

El Triunfo and the Church of the Holy Family

El Triunfo retains the character of the first church in the complex: narrower and older within Cusco’s colonial history. The Church of the Holy Family occupies the opposite side. Both are generally included in the same admission ticket when the ticket office sells access to the full Cathedral complex rather than a ticket for only one nave.

Mass and paid tourist visits are separate

Tourist visits follow the ticket office schedule from Monday through Sunday, commonly around 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. Confirm the current schedule at the entrance. A practical final admission time is about 45 minutes before closing.

Mass uses the main entrance facing the Plaza de Armas and the central nave. On weekdays, services are commonly held early in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Sundays usually have more Masses. During a service, visitors should not walk around the chapels with a tourist ticket or photograph the altar as though they were inside a museum.

If your goal is to attend Mass, you enter without purchasing the tourist circuit ticket, take a seat in the pews, and leave when the service ends. If your priority is to see the Zapata painting, the choir, and the Taytacha up close, purchase the admission ticket outside Mass hours.

On Holy Monday, Corpus Christi, and major celebrations during Cusco’s Jubilee Month, access conditions change. On those dates, the religious procession takes priority over the usual 10:00 a.m. ticket office schedule.

The Lord of the Earthquakes and Holy Monday

Local tradition connects the image with the 1650 earthquake: the Christ was carried outside, and the shaking is said to have stopped. The 1950 earthquake reinforced the same devotional tradition. Every Holy Monday, the image leaves the Cathedral, crosses the Plaza de Armas, follows a short processional route, and then returns. The square fills with people, while flower petals, straw, and incense smoke remain on the stone pavement well into the evening.

For travelers, this has one important practical consequence. On Holy Monday, you do not “visit the Cathedral interior” in the same way you would on an ordinary Tuesday in May. You are witnessing a religious celebration. Anyone who wants to explore the interior quietly should choose another day during Holy Week or visit the Cathedral after Holy Monday.

During the rest of the year, the image remains in its chapel and can be seen up close with the regular admission ticket.

Admission: the Cathedral is not included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket

Cusco Cathedral is not included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket. It is also not included in the standard half-day city tour.

2026 ticket price reference (prices may change without notice; payment is generally made in Peruvian soles):

Foreign adult: S/ 40

Student with valid student ID: S/ 20

Peruvian adult: S/ 20

Young children: admission is often free up to a certain age; confirm at the entrance

There is also a Religious Circuit or combined ecclesiastical ticket covering the Cathedral and other churches or religious sites in the historic center, depending on what is included that year. Common combinations may include the Church of the Society of Jesus, San Blas, or the Archbishop’s Palace Museum. It costs more than the individual S/ 40 Cathedral ticket and is worthwhile mainly if you plan to visit two or three churches on the same day. If the Cathedral is your only stop, the individual ticket is usually sufficient.

The ticket office is located on the El Triunfo side of the complex, not at the main entrance facing the Plaza de Armas.

How much time you need and the best time to visit

Thirty minutes is enough to walk through the nave and locate the Taytacha. Sixty minutes allows time for the Zapata painting, the main altar, and the chapels. Ninety minutes is better if the choir is open and included in your visit.

The first hour after 10:00 a.m. is often one of the easiest times to visit. By mid-afternoon, most city tour groups have already continued toward Sacsayhuaman, while the Plaza de Armas begins filling again with people returning from lunch. On Sunday mornings, Mass takes priority, so a visit after midday is generally more practical.

At approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level, the Cathedral interior can feel cold. Bring a light jacket, and avoid trekking shorts if you plan to attend Mass.

How to combine the Cathedral with the rest of your day in Cusco

The Half-Day Cusco City Tour begins at Coricancha and continues to Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. It does not include admission to the Cathedral. A practical combination is:

Morning: walk to the Cathedral from your hotel in the historic center and purchase the separate admission ticket.

Afternoon: join the 1:30 p.m. city tour. Alternatively, take a 9:00 a.m. city tour and visit the Cathedral after 3:00 p.m., provided no Mass is taking place in the main nave.

The following day works well for the Full-Day Sacred Valley Tour, which departs early and leaves little time for churches in the historic center. For that reason, it is better to visit the Cathedral on your Cusco city day rather than on the same day as Pisac or Ollantaytambo.

Travelers arriving by plane may prefer to leave the Cathedral for their second day. Visiting the interior involves standing, looking upward, and spending time quietly on your feet, which can feel more tiring if your flight landed only a few hours earlier.

How to plan your Cathedral visit

Keep three separate admission costs in mind: the Cathedral, Qoricancha, and the Cusco Tourist Ticket for the archaeological sites above the city.

Visit on a weekday if your priority is seeing the paintings and chapels without a major procession.

If your trip falls on Holy Monday, treat that day as a religious celebration rather than a museum visit.

Buy the Religious Circuit ticket only if you plan to enter another church included in the combination on the same day.

Do not assume the standard city tour already includes the Cathedral. It does not.

At Incredible Peru Tours, the city tour and Sacred Valley tour can be booked separately or included within a longer Peru itinerary. To coordinate a Cathedral visit with Mass schedules and group departure times, it is best to provide your exact arrival date in Cusco.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin occupies the northern side of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas.
