It was not just another religious site in Cusco’s historic center: sacred lines that organized the Cusco Valley extended from here, and this was the main center of worship dedicated to Inti, the Sun. The Dominican Order later built the Convent of Santo Domingo over its foundations. What visitors see today is this architectural superposition, not a museum reconstruction.

This guide explains which areas remain standing, which ticket you need to buy (it is not included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket), how much time to allow, and where Qoricancha fits into a half-day Cusco city tour.

The name and its place in Inca Cusco

Quri kancha, in Quechua, translates as “golden enclosure.” The complex occupied the southern sector of the Inca ceremonial center, on a terrace overlooking what is now Avenida El Sol, about a seven-minute walk from the Plaza de Armas along the same avenue.

Under Pachacutec, the temple ceased to be a local sanctuary and became the religious center of the Inca state. Chroniclers described it as the highest-ranking building in the capital, not because it was larger than Sacsayhuaman, but because of its religious importance. Its internal chambers were dedicated to Inti, Mama Killa, Ch’aska (Venus), thunder, and the rainbow. Offerings were placed in the courtyard, and according to those same chronicles, there was also a ceremonial garden with metal representations of corn, llamas, and plants.

The Inca city was conceived in relation to this point, not the other way around.

It is not the Temple of the Sun at Machu Picchu

At Machu Picchu, there is another structure also known as the Temple of the Sun or Torreón. It served a different function and sits at approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level within a circuit that has its own visitor capacity.

Qoricancha was the state temple of the Inca capital. Confusing the two can lead travelers to buy the wrong ticket or expect to see in Cusco the same structure shown in photographs of Machu Picchu. If your trip includes the citadel, see Temple of the Sun at Machu Picchu. This is a different site.

What happened to the gold

The gold plates that once covered the interior walls were removed during the early years of the Spanish occupation. Part of the metal was melted down. The Dominican convent was built using the Inca walls as foundations and, in several areas, as visible walls within the new structure.

This explains what visitors see today: the gold sheets are gone, but the stonework remains. The andesite blocks were cut with joints so precise that a wedge cannot fit between them, with slightly inclined walls and trapezoidal openings. The 1950 earthquake damaged sections of the colonial structure and exposed more Inca masonry than had been visible before. The curved wall on the eastern side, facing Avenida El Sol, is the section that most clearly shows the different behavior of the two architectural systems.

What you can see inside

Admission includes the convent complex and the surviving Inca chambers. The route is not a large maze. Its value lies in understanding each room rather than covering a long distance.

Chamber of Inti

This was the main chamber, oriented toward the sun. The trapezoidal niches around the perimeter remain visible. The mummies of rulers were once kept here, and sunlight was observed during key dates in the solar calendar, especially around the June solstice. The original furnishings are gone, but the walls remain.

Chamber of Mama Killa

This space was associated with the Moon. Chronicles describe its walls as being covered in silver rather than gold. For visitors, the most useful way to understand it is through the Inti–Killa pairing: the temple was not monotheistic, but instead distributed different forms of worship among neighboring chambers around the same courtyard.

Ch’aska, Illapa, and K’uychi

These smaller rooms were dedicated to Venus, lightning and thunder, and the rainbow. Ch’aska and the Pleiades were associated with agricultural cycles. Illapa represented storms, which were especially important in a region with seasonal rainfall. K’uychi appears in tradition as a visible link between the sky and the earth. The chambers are compact, so they are much easier to appreciate when you already understand their context; without an explanation, they can simply look like small stone rooms.

Inner courtyard and gardens

The courtyard organizes the entire complex. From here, the layout becomes easier to understand: chambers around the perimeter, the colonial cloister above them, and access toward the exterior gardens overlooking Avenida El Sol. The Qoricancha Site Museum is located in these gardens and requires a separate ticket.

Convent of Santo Domingo

This includes the Dominican church and cloister, with altarpieces, decorated ceilings in some sections, and the bell tower. The visit combines both historical periods within the same route. There is no separate Inca zone behind a turnstile. Visitors move directly from an Inca wall into a colonial space.

Bell tower

The climb is short and usually requires a separate payment at the convent ticket office, generally in cash and in Peruvian soles. The viewpoint overlooks the rooftops of central Cusco and, on a clear day, parts of the valley. It does not replace Sacsayhuaman, but it is worthwhile if you have extra time at the temple and feel comfortable with the altitude.

The ceque lines that began at Qoricancha

The ceques extended from Qoricancha: ritual lines that crossed the valley and connected sacred places known as huacas. The most commonly cited system includes 41 lines. They are not physically visible during the visit, but they help explain why Qoricancha was much more than a neighborhood temple. Calendar, lineage, and territory were organized in relation to this point. A guide who only describes it as the “golden enclosure” leaves out an important layer of its significance.

Qoricancha ticket and Cusco Tourist Ticket are two different things

This is one of the most common ticketing mistakes in central Cusco.

Admission to Qoricancha (temple + convent)

Qoricancha is not included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket. Admission is purchased at the entrance to the complex.

Typical 2026 price reference (confirm at the ticket office, as prices may change without notice):

Adult: S/ 15

University student with valid student ID: S/ 8

Young children: usually free

Bring Peruvian soles in cash. Credit or debit cards may not always be accepted.

Qoricancha Site Museum

The museum is located in the gardens and has a separate entrance from the temple. Unlike the temple itself, this museum is included in certain Cusco Tourist Ticket circuits, generally the circuit covering the city and South Valley sites such as Tipon and Pikillaqta. Exhibits include ceramics, textiles, and archaeological objects. It does not replace the visit to the Inca chambers inside the convent.

If you buy only the Cusco Tourist Ticket and arrive at the temple entrance, you will still need to pay a separate admission fee. Likewise, paying the S/ 15 temple ticket does not automatically include access to the museum.

Qoricancha Site Museum

What the city tour usually includes

On the Half-Day Cusco City Tour, admission to Qoricancha is included in the package along with transportation and the guide. The Cusco Tourist Ticket is still required for Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. They are separate admission systems.

Location, opening hours, and how much time you really need

Address: Calle Santo Domingo s/n, at the corner of Avenida El Sol.

Typical opening hours:

Monday through Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Sundays and some holidays: generally open only in the afternoon, often from around 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday mornings, the complex is generally not available for a full tourist visit. Anyone planning their first day in Cusco on a Sunday should move this stop to the afternoon or leave it for the city tour the following day.

Allow about 45 minutes if you simply want to walk through without stopping to read much. Seventy-five to 90 minutes gives you time to explore the chambers one by one, the cloister, and the gardens. A half-day city tour usually spends less time inside: enough to understand the basics, but not ideal if Qoricancha itself is one of the main reasons for your visit.

Where Qoricancha fits into the half-day city tour

Incredible Peru Tours operates two departures, typically around 9:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.–6:00 p.m. The tour includes hotel pickup and visits Qoricancha before continuing uphill to Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay.

Why it is visited first

Qoricancha is located within the city and at a lower elevation than the four archaeological sites above Cusco. Visiting it first avoids returning downtown at the end of the circuit and leaves the afternoon, or the following morning, free. It is also one of the stops where lack of acclimatization is most noticeable if you arrive by plane that same day: the main route is fairly flat, but the convent has steps and the group does not stop for long periods.

What you miss if you only visit with a group

The standard city tour does not stop at the Site Museum or include the bell tower. It also does not go into detail about the ceque system or every smaller chamber. If you want that level of detail, allow an extra hour on another day, ideally early in the morning before the complex becomes crowded.

Visiting independently or with a city tour

Visiting independently gives you control over how much time you spend inside, and you pay the admission fee directly at the entrance. The half-day city tour combines transportation, a guide, admission to Qoricancha, and the archaeological sites above the city in the same outing. In exchange, groups usually spend only about 25 to 40 minutes inside Qoricancha.

If Machu Picchu is the main focus of your trip and you only have one free afternoon in Cusco, the city tour is an efficient way to cover both the historic center and the archaeological sites above the city in a single block. If Qoricancha itself is a priority, visit independently on a weekday at opening time.

Longer itineraries that already include Cusco, such as the 13-Day Enigmatic Peru Tour, usually schedule this visit after the Route of the Sun, with a previous night in Cusco. In that format, Qoricancha is not improvised into the itinerary: it is visited after your body has already spent a night at approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet).

On June 24, the temple changes its function

Inti Raymi begins on the Qoricancha esplanade at around 9:00 a.m. The Inca greets the sun here before the procession continues to the Plaza de Armas and then to Sacsayhuaman. On this day, the interior does not operate like it would on an ordinary Tuesday. There are grandstands, controlled access, and a different ticketing system.

If your trip falls around June 24, the festival schedule takes priority over the regular S/ 15 admission. During the rest of the year, the temple generally operates as a regular visitor attraction.

How to plan your visit

Confirm the day of the week before you go; Sundays generally mean an afternoon visit.

Keep three separate admission costs in mind: the temple and convent, the Site Museum, and the Cusco Tourist Ticket for the archaeological sites above the city.

Schedule Qoricancha for your second day in Cusco if you arrive by plane on the first day.

If you do not have time to organize the different tickets independently, use the half-day city tour.

If your trip follows a Lima–coast–Puno–Cusco–Machu Picchu route, the temple is already included in longer programs such as the 13-Day Enigmatic Peru Tour.

At Incredible Peru Tours, the city tour can be booked on its own or as part of a longer Peru itinerary. When requesting the tour, provide your travel dates, group size, and whether you prefer a morning or afternoon departure.

Qoricancha, also spelled Coricancha or Qorikancha, was the principal temple of the Tahuantinsuyo.
