Before booking, many people think Humantay and Rainbow Mountain are similar: two one-day hikes and two landscapes near Cusco. On the ground, they are quite different. The decision depends less on which one looks better in a photo and more on your physical condition, the time you have, and how well you handle the altitude. Here we look at it with clear facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Humantay Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Humantay is a turquoise glacial lake in Soraypampa, Mollepata district, Anta province. It is at 4,200 m above sea level, at the foot of Humantay Mountain (5,473 m) and near Salkantay. The turquoise color comes from fine glacial sediment suspended in the water, the water\u2019s transparency, and the light depending on the time of day. That is why it looks different on a clear morning than on a cloudy afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Rainbow Mountain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is also called Vinicunca or Winicunca (\u201cnarrow-necked hill\u201d in Quechua). It is located in the Vilcanota mountain range, between the districts of Cusipata and Pitumarca. The reddish, ocher, turquoise, and yellow stripes come from different mineral layers accumulated over millions of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit you reach is around 5,036 m above sea level and the viewpoint reaches about 5,100 m. Some sources mention up to 5,200 m. The important thing: it is one of the highest accessible points near Cusco. It became well known around 2015, when melting snow revealed the colors that had previously been covered by snow. Main differences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The key difference is the altitude. Humantay is at 4,200 m; Vinicunca is above 5,000. You can feel those 800 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The type of landscape also changes. Humantay is glacial water with snowcapped mountains above, a more enclosed scene. Vinicunca is an open panorama of colorful mountains, with Ausangate in the background. The location is also different: Humantay is toward the northwest (Mollepata) and Vinicunca toward the southeast (Cusipata and Pitumarca).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Difficulty of each hike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Humantay is shorter but steeper: about 2 km of constant uphill hiking from Soraypampa, with an elevation gain of around 300 meters. It takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours to hike up, and about one hour to hike down. The slope does not give you much of a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vinicunca, depending on the route, involves between 5 and 8 km. The most common route today (via Cusipata and Phulawasipata) is around 5 km and is considerably flatter. The challenge is not the slope but the air: walking above 5,000 m is tiring even when the terrain is gentle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short: Humantay demands more from your legs; Vinicunca demands more from your lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altitude and acclimatization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Humantay has the lake at 4,200 m and the starting point at around 3,900 m. Vinicunca reaches about 5,036 m at the summit and 5,100 m at the viewpoint. Cusco is at 3,399 m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both cases, the most important thing is the same: spend at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before doing either one. For Vinicunca, because it is 800 meters higher, it is even more important to take it seriously. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol the day before, and hiking up slowly help reduce the risk of altitude sickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tour duration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Both are full-day tours with early morning departures, but Vinicunca takes longer because of the transfer. The road trip to the start of the hike takes around 3 to 3 and a half hours. Soraypampa (Humantay) is reached in about 3 hours, and the hike itself is shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tour to Vinicunca usually leaves between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. and returns around 6:00 p.m. Humantay has a similar schedule, but because the hike is shorter, many groups return a little earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scenery and what to expect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Humantay, you reach the shore of a turquoise lake surrounded by glaciers, with Salkantay rising behind it. It is a more enclosed place. The color of the water changes with the light, so photos can look very different depending on the time of day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Vinicunca, the scene is more open: wide skies and bands of color across the mountainside. From the summit you can see the Ausangate massif and, on some routes, the nearby Red Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which one to choose based on your physical condition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your knees or endurance are not up for steep slopes, Vinicunca via the short route is easier: mostly flat terrain, although at very high altitude. If you handle a short, intense effort well but are concerned about extreme altitude, Humantay keeps you 800 meters lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At both destinations, you can rent a horse from local horse handlers for a good part of the climb. At Humantay, it costs around 90 soles round trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which one to choose based on the time you have<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you only have one free day and want less physical strain, Humantay usually fits better because of its shorter hike. If you have more time and want the most famous destination right now, Vinicunca is that iconic photo, although it requires a longer day and more acclimatization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have just arrived in Cusco and have not yet completed two days of acclimatization, neither one is recommended on the same day. It is better to arrange your itinerary so the hike comes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which one to choose if it is your first time at altitude<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have never been above 3,500 m, Humantay is the more reasonable introduction. Its 4,200 m already gives you a chance to see how your body responds without suddenly going above 5,000. Many people use Humantay as a test during their first few days and leave Vinicunca for when they have already spent several days adapting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you still choose Vinicunca for your first high-altitude experience, go with an operator that carries emergency oxygen, hike up slowly, and do not push your pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you do both?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes. Many travelers with four or five days in Cusco do both. Since they are in opposite directions, they cannot be combined in a single day. An order that works well is to start with Humantay (lower and useful for acclimatization) and leave Vinicunca for one or two days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no absolute winner. If you are looking for a shorter hike, a close-up view of a glacial lake, and a more manageable altitude, choose Humantay. If you want the most famous colorful landscape and are not afraid of walking above 5,000 m, choose Vinicunca. And if you have enough time, do both, with Humantay first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
