How the circuit system works in 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Peru\u2019s Ministry of Culture divides access to Machu Picchu into numbered circuits that determine which sectors of the site each visitor may explore according to the ticket they purchased. There is no unrestricted ticket that allows free access to the entire site. Each circuit has a specific route, a mandatory direction of movement, and access to designated areas of the archaeological complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This system was designed to manage visitor flow so that the site\u2019s most fragile sectors do not experience simultaneous pressure that could damage them. The practical result for visitors is that they cannot walk through any area at any time: they must follow the circuit indicated on their ticket, and park rangers verify access at internal checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circuit 1: the short route through the main sectors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Circuit 1 is the shortest route at the site and covers the most representative sectors of Machu Picchu\u2019s urban area without including the full agricultural terrace section. It covers the same sectors as Circuit 1 plus the upper viewpoint, which is the location where the most photographed panoramic view of the citadel is obtained: the image with the terraces in the foreground, the temples in the center, and Huayna Picchu in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The estimated duration is between two and a half and three and a half hours, depending on the amount of time spent in each sector and the pace of the group. Circuit 3: the route through the lower area and agricultural terraces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Circuit 3 combines sectors of the urban area with the complete visit to the lower agricultural zone, including the terraces extending across the southern slope of the mountain, which in many aerial photographs appear as the most recognizable element of Machu Picchu\u2019s landscape. It also includes access to the storage sector, which is less visited than the temples and offers a different perspective on the logistical functioning of the Inca site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This circuit has a duration similar to Circuit 2 but follows a different route. It is a good option for visitors who already completed Circuit 2 on a previous visit and want to explore sectors they did not cover the first time, or for those with a special interest in Inca agricultural architecture and the productive organization of the citadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circuit 4: with access to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Circuit 4 includes access to the section of the Inca Trail that extends from the archaeological site to the Sun Gate, Inti Punku, the historical entrance used by the Inca Empire to access the citadel. This circuit is the only one that allows visitors to hike from the main entrance of Machu Picchu to Inti Punku and back without having completed the Inca Trail from kilometer 82.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The climb from the site entrance to the Sun Gate takes between one hour and one and a half hours. From that point, the view of Machu Picchu from above, with the entire citadel in the background and the Urubamba Valley below, is one of the most impressive perspectives the site offers. The return takes between 45 minutes and one hour downhill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complete Circuit 4 with enough time to enjoy the hike and the view at Inti Punku, it is recommended to calculate between four and five total hours inside the site, including the base circuit and the hike to the gate. Circuit 5: with access to the Inca Bridge (Hanging Bridge)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The bridge was built over the void of a vertical rock wall and originally served as a strategic access point to the site that could be closed in dangerous situations simply by removing the wooden planks forming the walkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hike to the bridge from the main entrance takes between 30 and 45 minutes along a narrow trail with views of the valley. Access to the bridge itself is currently restricted for conservation reasons, but the perspective from the designated observation point facing it is equally impressive. The ascent takes between 45 minutes and one hour, and the descent takes approximately the same amount of time, along a trail with steep stairways and, in some sections, assistance ropes. The views from the summit are extraordinary, but the route requires good physical condition and the absence of fear of heights. Availability is approximately 400 people per day, distributed across two shifts, and tickets sell out far in advance during high season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machu Picchu Mountain is the mountain that appears in the background of photographs taken from the northern sector of the site. It is less known than Huayna Picchu among international visitors, which in practice means that tickets are more available and that there are fewer people at the summit. The climb is longer than Huayna Picchu, taking between one and a half and two hours, and the views from above include a perspective of Machu Picchu from the opposite side of Huayna Picchu that very few photographs accurately document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
