This is the circuit that covers the most recognizable sectors of the archaeological complex, produces the most iconic photographs, and matches what most people have in mind when they think of Machu Picchu. It is also the one that sells out the earliest once ticket sales open for each season. This guide explains exactly what it includes, why it is in such high demand, and what you should know before buying it.

What Route 2A Is and Which Sectors It Covers

Route 2A is the main circuit of the Machu Picchu archaeological site, equivalent in the current numbering system to what for years was known as the standard or complete circuit of the site. It covers the sectors with the greatest architectural and ceremonial content, arranged in a route that allows visitors to see the citadel from different perspectives without repeating any section of the trail.

The Route 2A itinerary includes access to the Agricultural Terrace sector, with the upper viewpoint where visitors get the most photographed panoramic view of the site. It continues through the inner Sun Gate, which marks the transition between the agricultural sector and the urban sector. The route goes through the Main Plaza, the central space of the citadel from which the main ceremonial temples are distributed. It passes by the Temple of the Sun, with its trapezoidal window aligned with the winter solstice, the Palace of the Ñusta, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Sacristy, and the Intihuatana, the Inca solar clock located at the highest point of the urban sector with a documented astronomical function. The circuit ends through the Workshops sector and the lower agricultural sector, with terraces descending toward the Urubamba Valley.

Why It Sells Out Before Any Other Circuit

Route 2A concentrates the site’s demand for a reason that anyone who has searched for photos of Machu Picchu can immediately understand: it includes the two points that produce the most recognizable images of the complex. These are the upper viewpoint with the panoramic view of the terraces and Huayna Picchu in the background, and the Intihuatana, with its unique astronomical and ceremonial context in the Inca world after the other sun stones across the imperial territory were destroyed during the Spanish conquest.

These two points are not available on any other circuit of the site with the same level of accessibility. Route 1B includes them in some of its variations, but Route 2A is the circuit that combines these elements with the most complete route through the main urban sector. For a first visit to Machu Picchu, it is the circuit that makes the most sense for most visitor profiles, and that clear match between what the circuit offers and what visitors are looking for is the direct reason why its spaces are the first to sell out.

During the high season, from June to August, Route 2A tickets for the 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. time slots are the first to disappear after ticket sales open. Midday time slots usually have greater availability because the light and the number of groups during those hours are less favorable for photography, but even those spaces sell out before those of any other circuit for the same dates.

Classic Machu Picchu

The Real Duration of the Complete Route

Route 2A is the longest circuit among those available at the site. A complete visit at a moderate pace, with time to observe each sector and take photos at the most important points, takes between three and four hours. Visitors without a guide and walking at a faster pace can complete it in two and a half hours. Those with a specialized private guide who dedicate real time to each archaeological point of interest can extend the visit to five hours without exhausting the content of the route.

For a first visit, three and a half hours is the most appropriate amount of time. This margin allows visitors to explore all sectors of the circuit without rushing, stop at the most visually impressive points with enough time to observe and photograph them, and leave the site with the feeling of having seen what the place has to offer during that visit.

The Intihuatana: The Most Irreplaceable Element of the Circuit

The Intihuatana is the most unique point of Route 2A and one of the strongest reasons to choose this specific circuit over shorter alternatives. It is a carved granite stone that functioned as an Inca solar clock and astronomical observatory, located at the highest point of the citadel’s urban sector with clear lines of sight toward the four cardinal points.

The Quechua name Intihuatana means approximately “the place where the sun is tied,” referring to the Inca winter solstice ceremony in which the priest performed the symbolic ritual of tying the sun to the stone post to prevent it from continuing to move away on the horizon. It is one of the few Intihuatana stones that survived the Spanish conquest intact, as those astronomical observation structures were systematically destroyed in all Inca sites controlled by the Spanish. The one at Machu Picchu survived precisely because the site was not discovered by the conquistadors.

This context of uniqueness, fully appreciated when a guide explains it on-site in front of the structure itself, is what transforms the Intihuatana from a block of stone into one of the most meaningful objects of Inca heritage. Seeing it without that context is still a valid experience, but it is incomplete compared with what this element can offer when visitors understand what it is and why it exists.

Intihuatana

The Upper Viewpoint: How to Get There and When to Go

The upper viewpoint on Route 2A is the most requested point of the circuit and the place with the highest concentration of groups during peak traffic hours. It is located at the northern end of the agricultural area and is reached from the main entrance of the site by walking up to the left toward the terraces before entering the urban sector.

The ascent from the entrance to the viewpoint takes between 10 and 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. During the first morning time slots, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., the number of visitors at this point is the lowest of the day, and the chances of getting a clear photo frame for a few minutes are higher than in later time slots. Starting around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m., the accumulation of groups at this point means that waiting for a clear shot requires additional patience.

The most efficient strategy for Route 2A, if the goal is to photograph the upper viewpoint, is to go directly to that point as soon as you enter the site during the first available time slot, before continuing with the inner circuit. This sequence guarantees the best light and the lowest number of visitors at the most in-demand photography point before the second time-slot groups arrive at the site.

Upper Machu Picchu

Route 2A vs. Route 1B: Which One to Choose

Route 2A and Route 1B cover similar sectors of the site, with differences in the order and extent of the route. Route 2A is the most complete circuit of the urban sector and requires the most time. Route 1B is a slightly shorter version that can be completed in less time while still providing access to the site’s most photographed points.

For a first visit with enough time available, Route 2A is the best choice because it covers the complex in greater depth. For a shorter visit or for travelers with lower physical endurance who prefer to reduce walking time without missing the most representative points, Route 1B may be the more practical option.

The price difference between the two circuits is minor and should not be the determining factor in the decision. The time available inside the site and the level of depth visitors want from the experience are the criteria that truly matter when choosing between the two.

How to Secure a Route 2A Ticket in Advance

Since Route 2A sells out the earliest during the high season, securing a ticket for the right date and time requires acting with enough advance notice before the visit.

During June, July, and August, Route 2A tickets for the 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. time slots can sell out four to eight weeks before the visit date. During the shoulder-season months of May and September, two to three weeks in advance is usually enough for the most requested time slots. During the low season, from November to March, availability is greater, and in some periods tickets can be purchased less than a week in advance.

When Route 2A tickets are sold out for the dates you need, the closest alternatives in terms of content are Route 1B, which covers the main points of the circuit including the upper viewpoint, or a different date within your itinerary when Route 2A still has availability.

Do you want to secure a Route 2A ticket for your visit to Machu Picchu, or do you need guidance on which circuit has availability for your dates? At Incredible Peru Tours, we manage tickets for all site circuits with the most suitable schedule and availability for each itinerary.

If there is one Machu Picchu route that concentrates most of the site’s global demand, it is Route 2A.
