At more than 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) above sea level, just off Puno, it offers the chance to visit two very different places in a single day: the floating islands of Uros and Taquile Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a Lake Titicaca Tour Begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day starts early. Between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., we pick you up at your hotel and head to the port. Before long, the city falls behind and the lake opens up ahead: wide and calm, with the sky seeming to meet the water. You board the boat, and in about 20 to 30 minutes you arrive at the Uros Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the Floating Islands of Uros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Uros do not live on solid ground. They live on islands built from totora reeds, a plant that grows along the shores of Lake Titicaca. The surface gives slightly under your feet as you walk. The homes, boats, and much of what you see are made from the same reeds. The guide and local families explain how the islands are built, how the layers are renewed as the base begins to decompose, and how residents cook and fish. There is time to talk, take photos, and, if you choose, ride in a traditional totora reed boat. The boat ride is optional and is paid directly to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long the Uros Visit Lasts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit to the Uros lasts about an hour. The crossing takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours, depending on the type of boat. It is the calmest part of the day. The color of the water changes, distant islands come into view, and the mountain range appears on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You Will Find on Taquile Island<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taquile does not float. It is an island of stone, agricultural terraces, and walking trails. The local people speak Quechua and maintain a strong sense of communal life. Their textile tradition, especially the knitting done by men, is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Walk to the Village and Viewpoint<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you leave the boat, there is an uphill walk. Reaching the village and viewpoint takes between 30 and 60 minutes, with steps and increasingly open views along the way. It is not a difficult hike, but the altitude makes itself felt. Walk slowly, drink water, and avoid carrying more than you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Do on Taquile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the top, you will find the main square, traditional textiles, and, on many days, a weaving demonstration or short traditional dance. Lunch usually includes Lake Titicaca trout, potatoes, quinoa, and other Andean dishes prepared by local families or restaurants. For many travelers, eating while looking out over the lake is one of the most memorable parts of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free Time and Return to Puno<\/h4>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After lunch, there is some time to explore the village, walk up to the viewpoint, and buy textiles directly from the people who make them. Then you walk back down to the dock and return to Puno. It does not include the optional totora reed boat ride, tips, extra drinks, or souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations for Visiting Uros and Taquile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acclimatizing first helps make the day more enjoyable. If you are arriving from Cusco or from the coast, spending a day in Puno before the tour can help reduce altitude-related discomfort. Dress in layers: mornings are cold, the midday sun is strong, and the wind over the lake can be constant. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are almost as important as comfortable walking shoes. There is walking on Taquile.
