This guide answers one question: how many days do you need to travel through southern Peru without cutting your overnight stays too short? This is not an island-hopping itinerary. Nor is it a list of what to save for a second trip. This is about how much time you actually need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practical terms, southern Peru means Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, and Machu Picchu. Paracas and Huacachina only fit if you have extra days. Every transfer takes up a chunk of your day. Arequipa – Puno takes around 6 hours. Puno\u2013Cusco takes between 6 and 10 hours depending on the service. An overnight bus may \u201cgive\u201d you an extra day, but it takes away a good night’s sleep. If you take two overnight buses in a row, you may arrive in Cusco with very little energy for climbing Inca terraces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lima – Cusco flight takes just over an hour. The airport does not. Plan on using about half a day unless your flight leaves early in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Lima, a third night is only worthwhile if you are genuinely interested in exploring the city itself. In Puno, a fourth night rarely adds much if you have already visited the lake.
