The system that works: one main suitcase and a daypack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The most practical combination is a medium-sized suitcase that stays at your hotel or travels in the luggage compartment, plus a small backpack that you always carry with you. Your backpack should contain your documents, money, medications, a light jacket, water, and everything you need for one night away. This way, you can leave your suitcase in a safe place and go on a one- or two-day excursion without carrying all your belongings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What type of luggage should you choose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Wheeled suitcase or travel backpack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The streets of Cusco\u2019s historic center and neighborhoods such as San Blas are cobblestoned, narrow, and in some areas have stairs. Many hotels located in old colonial houses do not have elevators. A suitcase with large, sturdy wheels works well if your hotel has vehicle access nearby; a travel backpack is more comfortable if you need to walk with it or are staying in pedestrian areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A medium-sized suitcase that weighs between 15 and 20 kg (33 – 44 lbs) when fully packed is enough for a two- or three-week trip. Staying below airline weight limits gives you extra space for handicrafts or souvenirs you may purchase along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domestic flights<\/td>
The cheapest fares usually include only a personal item or carry-on luggage. A checked suitcase, usually up to 23 kg (50 lbs), may have an additional cost.<\/td><\/tr>
Intercity buses<\/td>
Major bus companies usually include around 20 kg (44 lbs) in the luggage compartment. You receive a ticket for each piece of luggage, which you need to collect it upon arrival.<\/td><\/tr>
Train to Machu Picchu<\/td>
Only hand luggage of up to 5 kg (11 lbs) per passenger is allowed, with size restrictions. Large suitcases cannot be taken on the train.<\/td><\/tr>

You can only enter with small backpacks. Larger bags must be left at the storage facility near the entrance.<\/td><\/tr>
Multi-day treks<\/td>

At your Cusco hotel before visiting Machu Picchu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Most hotels in Cusco store luggage free of charge for their guests, even if you are not staying there the night you are away. Ask them to provide a receipt or label your suitcase with your name and return date. For a one-day tour, such as a train trip to Machu Picchu with a visit to Huayna Picchu, your daypack is usually enough.
