Early in the morning, between 4:00 am. and 4:30 am we will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco City and then head south, leaving the city in our tourist transport along a paved road, which passes through the village of Checacupe and then Pitumarca village; the journey here takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.

We will continue with our transport on an unpaved road but in good conditions for another 1 hour and 30 minutes, passing through the Pampachiri Peasant Community – Checkpoint where we will show our tickets – then we continue until reaching the bus parking at around 7:00 am, place until where the road ends, it’s the Hike Head.

Upon arriving at the parking lot, we will have a delicious breakfast prepared by our excellent cook. After enjoying breakfast, our Guide will give us a brief talk about the place and the route. Around 8 am. we will begin with the hike, first climbing for about 50 minutes to reach our main destination of the day, Rainbow Mountain (5,026 meters above sea level), a unique place that Mother Nature whimsically formed as if it were a large work of art.

At Rainbow Mountain we will have enough time to take lots of photos. From there we have excellent panoramic views of the Ausangate Snowy (the highest snow mountain in southeast Peru), we will also rest and after 40 minutes everybody is ready to descend.

From Rainbow Mountain our walk has a slight descent of 1 hour and 30 minutes passing through an uneven red mountain, then we continue descending passing close to some lagoons, until we reach the lagoon known as Yanacocha (black lagoon) located at 4,750 m.a.s.l. where we will have the chance to rest and admire the place.

From Yanacocha Lagoon our walk will climb for 1 hour to the first pass, known as Wasaqocha Pass, located at 4,985 meters above sea level. Upon arrival we will witness the best panoramic views of the Ausangate Snowy and the entire area; here we will have a good rest and enjoy eating our snacks.

From Wasaqocha Pass we will descend for about 15 minutes, then the trail is flat for 45 minutes passing along beautiful lagoons, then we will have a small climb of 15 minutes until reaching the Second Pass, known as Puca Q’asa Pass, located at 4,960 meters above at the sea level. There we take a short break and if we are lucky, spot the largest flying bird in the world, the great Condor.

From the Puca Q’asa Pass the hike will be downhill for about 15 minutes, until we reach our base camp located next to the beautiful Patacocha lagoon, 4,950 meters above sea level. Upon arrival we will enjoy our lunch, then there’s time to rest and in the evening we will have dinner. During dinner our guide will share the required information about the following day, so that you are fully informed, ready and prepared for the second day.

After dinner and the information received, it is advisable going to bed at a reasonable time, to wake up in the early hours of the morning and arrive at the Climbing Area early.

DAY 2: PATACOCHA-INCA SNOWY-HUAYNA AUSANGATE-CUSCO CITY

Highlights of the day: If it’s your first time on a Snowy, you’ll receive the first technical climbing instruction lessons on the impressive Inca Snowy, around 5,150 meters above sea level, learning how to use all required technical equipment, then climb the Snowy and make your first ascents… Explore little-known places admiring the beauty of the gorges, valleys, rivers and lagoons of the Andean heights…

On this second day we wake up early with a delicious coca tea, then enjoy a good breakfast to start walking at 4:00 am. We will hike for 2 hours up to the Climbing Practice Area, located at 5,150 meters above sea level, at the Inca Snowy.

Upon arriving at the Climbing Practice Area, we will begin the Technical Instruction at 6:30 am, with the recognition of the required technical materials such as: climbing boots, crampons, marching axes, harnesses, carabiners, stakes, ice screws, etc. Then, we will continue with the Instruction of Mountain Techniques and Safety such as rigging, anchoring, rappelling or controlled descents.

Next we will make our first climbs and rappel. All Technical Instruction will be 100% practical, ending around 10am. and after the photo session and a well-deserved rest, we will begin the hike, descending for 1 hour to our Base Camp, arriving at approximately 11:30 am.

Upon arriving at our camp we have a brief rest, and around noon there’s a refreshing and delicious lunch. Then we will prepare our backpacks to continue the trip and at around 1 pm we leave Base Camp to descend for 1 hour and 30 minutes, to the region of Pacocha Pampa, 4,300 meters above sea level.

Then the hike has a gentle descent, passing by small local houses made of stone, where we have the opportunity to interact with the residents. During this trip we will be able to see herds of South American camelids such as the llama and the alpaca, some small birds of the region, lagoons and streams with crystal clear waters, to arrive at the Huayna Ausangate region at around 5:30 pm, where our transport will be waiting.
