INTRODUCTION
The Lares Trek is one of the most authentic trekking routes to Machu Picchu. Over four days and 37 kilometers, the trail passes through high-altitude Quechua communities where traditional ways of life have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Backstrap loom weaving, alpaca herding and stone architecture are part of the everyday landscape, along with a warmth that standard tourist circuits rarely offer.
Camp setup includes a dining tent with tables and chairs, a toilet tent and air mattresses, though conditions are mountain-basic: no showers, cold nights and limited facilities. This route is designed for active travelers who prioritize experience over comfort.
On the fourth day, the group boards the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, arriving at Machu Picchu the following morning. Reaching the Inca citadel after days of walking through the Andean highlands carries a different weight than arriving by bus, and that contrast is part of what makes this trek worth doing.

DETAILED ITINERARY
DAY 01: CUSCO-CALCA-LARES VILLAGE (TERMAS)-HUACA WASI
Today’s highlights: Soak in the natural hot springs at Lares and visit Huaca Wasi, a textile community where weavers produce handmade goods using techniques passed down through generations.
Pickup from your hotel at 5:30 am. After meeting your guide and cook, the group travels approximately two hours by private van to Calca, where breakfast is served around 7:00 am. The town has basic facilities and local stores.
From Calca, the journey continues for another two hours to the Lares hot springs, the starting point of the trek. The muleteer waits here with the horses and mules that will carry the camping equipment and food throughout the route. While the team prepares the gear, participants have approximately two hours to enjoy the thermal pools. Lunch is served at midday, prepared by the group’s cook.
At 2:00 pm the day’s walk begins: a moderate three-hour stretch with a gradual ascent. The path passes through local communities, with frequent encounters with residents along the way. The campsite at Huaca Wasi, at 3,800 m.a.s.l., is the arrival point around 5:00 pm, where dinner is served.

DAY 02: HUACA WASI- IPSAYCOCHA PASS – PATACANCHA VILLAGE
Today’s highlights: The most demanding day of the trek. Ascent to Ipsaycocha Pass at 4,550 m.a.s.l., the highest point of the Lares Trek, with direct views of the Pitusiray, Sawasiray, Chicón and Verónica snowcapped peaks. On clear nights, the campsite offers exceptional stargazing conditions.
The day starts at 6:00 am with coca tea and breakfast. The morning walk covers approximately four hours of sustained ascent to the pass. It is the most physically demanding stretch of the entire route, but the panoramic views from the summit make the effort worthwhile. From the pass, a one-hour descent leads to Ipsaycocha Lake, where lunch is served.
In the afternoon, the group descends for another two hours to the village of Patacancha at 3,750 m.a.s.l. This section of the route passes through inhabited terrain where encounters with local residents and free-roaming llamas and alpacas are common. The campsite receives the group with arrival tea and dinner.

DAY 03: PATACANCHA – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES.
Today’s highlights: Descent through Willoq, one of the communities in the region with the strongest preservation of indigenous customs. Visit to the Pumamarca archaeological site and its Inca agricultural terraces. Walking arrival into Ollantaytambo, considered one of the most significant living Inca towns in the Sacred Valley, followed by the train journey to Aguas Calientes.
After breakfast at the campsite, the group begins a 40-minute descent to the village of Willoq at 3,500 m.a.s.l. The community maintains traditional dress and customs that have been preserved with little change across generations. From Willoq, the walk continues for an hour and a half to the Pumamarca archaeological site at 3,200 m.a.s.l., where the Inca agricultural terraces provide one of the best photographic stops of the entire route.
After a rest at Pumamarca, the group descends along a direct path to Ollantaytambo, arriving around 4:00 pm. The town, at 2,800 m.a.s.l. on the banks of the Vilcanota River, preserves the original Inca urban grid and is considered one of the most representative living Inca settlements in the Sacred Valley.
From Ollantaytambo, the group boards the train to Aguas Calientes. The journey takes approximately one hour and forty minutes through the Vilcanota canyon to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. Arrival in Aguas Calientes at 2,000 m.a.s.l. marks the end of the walking portion of the trek.
The night is spent at a hotel. Dinner is included and served at a local restaurant. During the meal, the guide covers the following day’s program: entry times, available circuits inside the citadel and recommendations for making the most of the visit. An early night is strongly recommended given the early start on day 4.

Day 4: AGUAS CALIENTES VILLAGE – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
Today’s highlights: Early entry to Machu Picchu ahead of Inca Trail groups and same-day train visitors. Sunrise over the citadel on clear mornings. Optional pre-booked tickets available for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
After breakfast, the group departs the hotel at 5:30 am and walks to the bus station at 2,000 m.a.s.l. The bus ascends in 30 minutes along the switchback road to Machu Picchu at 2,400 m.a.s.l. The guided tour lasts approximately two hours, covering the history of the site, its principal structures and the factors behind its standing as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. After the guided portion, participants have free time to explore independently, take photographs or visit additional areas. Entry to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain requires a pre-booked ticket, subject to availability.
In the afternoon, the group boards the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, a 25-minute ride. There is time for lunch in town before the return train departs at 6:00 pm. The train arrives in Ollantaytambo at 7:50 pm, where private transport waits to transfer the group to Cusco, arriving at approximately 8:30 pm. Drop-off is at each participant’s hotel, marking the end of the Lares Trek.

Temperatures at altitude drop significantly at night, even during the dry season. We recommend checking the equipment list well in advance: if any item is missing, there is time to source it before departure. If bringing it from your home country is not an option, Cusco has a good number of outdoor gear shops where you can rent or purchase everything you need.

Currently, Machu Picchu has an approximate daily limit of 4,500 visitors during the regular season and up to 5,600 visitors during the high season, according to the capacity established to protect and preserve the site.
8. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE, COOK AND PORTERS?
Tips are not mandatory, there is no exact amount. Only if you wish, at the end of the tour you can give tips for the tour guides, cooks and porters. This is something additional and totally voluntary, really what you consider fair will be highly appreciated by the Service Personnel.
9. DO I NEED TO BRING ADDITIONAL MONEY TO MY TOUR?
Yes, only if you want to buy snacks such as cookies, dehydrated fruit, chocolates, etc. or additional drinks such as sodas, beers or an energy beverage, because it is possible to buy these products in small stores in the area for the first 2 days.
In addition, there is the option of taking a hot shower the first day for 10 soles. Also, if you want to buy a souvenir or memories from the trek, there is the Craft Market in Aguas Calientes village. There is also the additional option of enjoying the Thermo-medicinal Baths of the Village on the 4th day, the Entrance Price is 20 soles. For all this we recommend that you have between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles. You may not need to spend any of this money, but in case of an Emergency, make sure to have enough cash.
