Perfect Trip: Hikes and Relaxing Time This was an incredible experience. Each hike always had an amazing ending, in terms of views and in terms of places to stay. Our guide (Herbert) is a fantastic person and would recommended him with my eyes closed. He was always looking out for us and making sure everything was smooth and ready. This trip is the perfect balance between challenging hikes and relaxing time. Peruvians are one of the best people I’ve met and made our trip memorable. The food, traditional and fantastic. I would recommend to make the reservation with at least two months in advance, so that the reservations (restaurants, hotels, and transportation) are all ready and aligned. We did the reservation with three months and it was perfect.

Great trek, thanks Hector! We had an amazing track alongside Pat towards Machu Picchu. The scenery was amazing as was the food, but the experience was made a lot better by our guide Hector and the team at IPT. While the track was difficult at times Hector was very accommodating and encouraging. Hector provided lots of information about the Incas and his passion for the history was great to experience. Highly recommend this trek!!

Excelente experiencia.!!!

I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours. Using Incredible Peru Tours, my companion and I reserved two tours: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Prior to making a reservation, we discovered that they were really organised and helpful. Every little detail was meticulously handled by Fredy, and communication with him was a breeze. Considering everything we did, both excursions were excellent and incredibly affordable. Luis, our guide, is incredibly kind and informed. Since our time in Cusco is extended, we will most likely do another tour with this company. To anyone travelling to this stunning nation, I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours.

TOUR DETAILS

Information

INTRODUCTION

The Lares Trek combines two unforgettable experiences into one journey: discovering the traditional way of life in the Andean communities of the Lares Valley and hiking the final section of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The adventure begins at the Lares Hot Springs and crosses Huaca Wasi Pass (4,600 meters / 15,092 feet above sea level), the highest point of the trek, offering spectacular views of the snowcapped Pitusiray, Sawasiray, Chicón, and Verónica mountains.

Along the way, you will pass through traditional villages of shepherds and weavers who preserve customs and ways of life passed down since Inca times. The trail also takes you past beautiful mountain lakes and native queuña forests. During the final days, the route connects with the Short Inca Trail, beginning at Km 104. You will explore the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna before reaching Machu Picchu through Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, which served as the original entrance to the ancient Inca citadel.

We take care of all necessary permits, camping equipment, meals along the trail, and the services of professional guides, cooks, and muleteers. This allows you to focus entirely on the trekking experience, breathtaking scenery, and meaningful encounters with local Andean communities.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Book in advance. Permits for the Inca Trail (Km 104) are limited and often sell out several months ahead.
  • Arrive in Cusco at least one day before the trek. The city sits at approximately 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level, and your body needs time to adjust to the altitude.
  • Bring your original valid identification document (passport or national ID). It must match the document used to obtain your trekking permit and will be checked at Inca Trail checkpoints and Machu Picchu.
  • Wear comfortable, previously broken in hiking boots and dress in layers. Nights at high altitude campsites are cold throughout the year. Bring a waterproof jacket or rain poncho regardless of the season.
  • Pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and insect repellent, especially for the cloud forest section of the Inca Trail.
  • Store any luggage you do not need during the trek at our office in Cusco or at your hotel, free of charge.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Relax in the natural Lares Hot Springs before beginning your trekking adventure.
  • Cross Huaca Wasi Pass (4,600 meters / 15,092 feet), enjoying panoramic views of the snowcapped Pitusiray, Sawasiray, Chicón, and Verónica mountains.
  • Meet traditional Andean communities of weavers and shepherds who continue to preserve their ancestral textile traditions and customs.
  • Hike past beautiful mountain lakes and native queuña (Polylepis) forests, home to a distinctive tree species native to the Andes.
  • Enter Machu Picchu via the Short Inca Trail (Km 104), including a visit to the impressive Wiñay Wayna archaeological site.
  • Arrive at Machu Picchu through Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), the historic entrance to the Inca citadel.
  • Enjoy a guided tour of Machu Picchu with a professional bilingual guide.

Pickup from your hotel is scheduled for 6:30 AM. Your guide and cook will welcome you before departing in our private van. The drive takes approximately 2 hours, offering beautiful views of the Sacred Valley, fertile farmland, and snowcapped peaks. Our first stop is the town of Calca, where you can make any last minute purchases and use the restroom facilities.

At approximately 2:00 PM, we begin our hike with a moderate uphill climb lasting about 3 hours. Along the way, you will enjoy spectacular mountain scenery and have the opportunity to visit small Andean villages and interact with local residents. We arrive at the Huaca Wasi campsite (3,800 meters / 12,467 feet above sea level) around 5:00 PM, where dinner will be served before spending the night in comfortable camping tents.

The second day is the longest and most challenging of the entire journey. After taking photos, we continue downhill for approximately 45 minutes until reaching Auroray Cocha (4,400 meters / 14,436 feet above sea level), where lunch will be served. We then descend for another 2 hours, passing Milpo Lake and a native queuña forest, until arriving at the Miski Unuyoc campsite (3,700 meters / 12,139 feet above sea level). In the evening, our cook prepares dinner, followed by an overnight stay in camping tents.

Upon arrival at Km 104, the starting point of our hike, we present our passports, trekking permits, and entrance tickets at the first checkpoint. We then begin our hike with a guided visit to Chachabamba (2,100 meters / 6,890 feet above sea level), the first archaeological site along the route. From here, we start an approximately 3 hour uphill climb, passing beautiful waterfalls before reaching the impressive Wiñay Wayna archaeological site (2,650 meters / 8,694 feet above sea level). This remarkable Inca complex features ceremonial fountains, temples, and agricultural terraces that showcase the architectural achievements of the Inca civilization.

A few minutes beyond Wiñay Wayna, we stop for lunch and a short rest. Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you have questions before booking the Lares Trek and Inca Trail to Machu Picchu? We have gathered the most common questions from our travelers about difficulty, weather, packing, meals, and reservations. We recommend reading these FAQs along with the itinerary and tour details so you have all the information you need before contacting us.

1. Do I Need to Book the Lares Trek in Advance?

Yes. We recommend booking several months in advance, especially during the peak travel season, because permits for the Inca Trail (Km 104) and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu are limited and often sell out quickly.

2. How Difficult Is the Lares Trek and Inca Trail?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude and several uphill sections. The route crosses Huaca Wasi Pass at 4,600 meters (15,092 feet) above sea level.

Most travelers with a reasonable level of physical fitness and proper altitude acclimatization can complete and enjoy the trek comfortably.

3. Are Horses or Porters Used During the Lares Trek?

The Lares Trek uses horses and muleteers to transport food, cooking equipment, and travelers’ personal luggage, up to 7 kg (15 lbs) per person.

This is one of the differences between the Lares Trek and the Classic Inca Trail, where equipment must be carried by porters under official regulations.

You only need to carry your personal daypack. Horses are not permitted on the final section of the Short Inca Trail (Km 104).

4. What Is the Best Time of Year to Do the Lares Trek?

The best time to hike the Lares Trek is during the dry season, from April through October. During these months, trails are generally firmer, and clearer skies offer excellent views of the snowcapped mountains and beautiful Andean lakes.

May through September are the most popular months for trekking.

The rainy season runs from November through March. Although the Lares Trek remains accessible, trails can become muddy and slippery.

Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, the Lares Trek itself does not close in February. However, the Short Inca Trail section (Km 104) is closed during February for maintenance.

5. Is My Entrance to Machu Picchu Guaranteed?

Entrance to Machu Picchu depends on ticket availability. For this reason, we strongly recommend booking several months in advance to secure admission for your preferred travel date.

6. What Meals Are Included in the Lares Trek and Inca Trail?

We provide meals throughout the trek, freshly prepared by our professional cook using ingredients purchased at local markets.

Meals include breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and traditional afternoon tea. We do not use canned or dehydrated meals.

We also accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free diets, as well as food allergies, at no additional cost. Please inform us of any dietary requirements when making your reservation.

7. How Much Should I Tip the Guide, Cook, and Muleteers?

Tips are entirely optional, and there is no fixed or required amount.

At the end of the tour, you are welcome to show your appreciation by tipping your guide, cook, and muleteers if you are satisfied with their service.

Any contribution is voluntary and will be sincerely appreciated by our team.

8. Do I Need to Bring Extra Money on the Tour?

Yes, we recommend bringing some extra cash for personal purchases.

During the first few days of the trek, you may want to buy snacks such as cookies, dried fruit, or chocolate, as well as beverages like soda, beer, or energy drinks from small local shops along the route.

You may also want to purchase souvenirs at the handicraft market in Aguas Calientes or visit the town’s hot springs, which have an approximate entrance fee of 20 Peruvian soles.

We recommend carrying between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles for unexpected expenses, although you may not need to spend the entire amount.

Booking with us is safe, easy, and convenient. You can pay for your tour in two installments, with the final payment due up to one day before departure.

Availability and Prices

Disponibilidad Machu Picchu

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The Lares Trek does not require the limited permits needed for the Classic Inca Trail, so availability is generally good throughout most of the year.
  • However, the final section along the Short Inca Trail (Km 104) and entrance tickets to Machu Picchu have limited availability. These permits are shared among all authorized tour operators and can sell out as reservations increase.
  • We strongly recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred travel date, especially during the peak season from May through September.
  • If your preferred date is no longer available, you can consider alternative trekking routes to Machu Picchu, such as the 2 Day Short Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek, the Choquequirao Trek, or the 4 Day Classic Inca Trail.
