INTRODUCTION
The Choquequirao to Machu Picchu Trek combines two of the most significant archaeological sites in Peru in a 4-day route that crosses canyons, high-altitude communities and mountain terrain that does not appear on standard tourist circuits.
The route descends from Cusco toward Capuliyoc and the Apurímac Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the country, reaching the campsite at Playa Rosalinas on the first day. The second day leads to Choquequirao, an Inca citadel built on a ridge above 3,000 m.a.s.l., with agricultural terraces, ceremonial enclosures and temples that remain under ongoing excavation. Due to its difficult access and low visitor numbers, Choquequirao offers an experience that Machu Picchu can no longer replicate.
The route continues over the Abra San Juan pass and through the village of Yanama, with an overnight stay at the Majestic Sky Domes Eco Lodge. On the final day, the trek ends at Machu Picchu, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
This trek is designed for physically fit travelers looking for a route with genuine historical weight, away from overcrowded trails.

Itinerary
DAY 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Playa Rosalinas – Santa Rosa Campsite
Pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 am. The group travels four hours by private transport to Capuliyoc at 2,915 m.a.s.l., the starting point of the trek. On arrival, the cook serves breakfast while the muleteer organizes the equipment and loads the horses.
Capuliyoc offers the first viewpoint of the route, with direct views of the Wayna Cachora and Padrayoc snowcapped peaks, both above 5,400 m.a.s.l. The area is covered in native vegetation: begonias, orchids, cacti and bromeliads line the path, and hummingbirds, quetzals and toucans are frequently spotted during the early morning hours.
The walk begins around 9:30 am with three hours of continuous descent into the Apurímac Canyon. The path winds downward through dense vegetation of bromeliads, orchids and bamboo to Playa Rosalinas, on the banks of the Apurímac River at 1,550 m.a.s.l., the lowest point of the entire route. Lunch is served here around 1:00 pm, followed by a rest stop with tea.
After the break, the most demanding stretch of the day begins: a two-hour steep ascent to the Santa Rosa campsite at 2,050 m.a.s.l. Arrival is scheduled for 5:00 pm. Dinner is served at the campsite.

DAY 2: Santa Rosa Campsite – Marampata – Choquequirao Archaeological Site
Today is a very important day on our trek, as we will reach the Great Inca Site of Choquequirao, which we will explore accompanied by detailed explanations from our expert guide.
On this second day, our cook will wake us up at 7:00 am with a cup of coca tea served in our camping tents. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will begin our hike.
We will start hiking around 8:30 am. The trail will be uphill with a gradual ascent for approximately 3 hours until we reach the area known as Marampata (2,850 meters above sea level / 9,350 feet), where we will take a break and enjoy impressive views of the Apurímac Canyon.
After a well-deserved rest, we will continue hiking for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the campsite area (3,000 meters / 9,843 feet), located very close to the Choquequirao Archaeological Site. We expect to arrive at the campsite around 12:30 pm. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our cook. Later, we will have time to rest and leave our backpacks in our comfortable tents.
In the afternoon, we will walk only 10 minutes to reach the incredible Choquequirao Archaeological Site (3,050 meters / 10,007 feet), where we will spend practically the entire afternoon exploring this mysterious Inca site. Our professional guide will explain the history of the place, which remained abandoned and forgotten until a few years ago. It was only when tourism began in the area that exploration efforts truly started.
Currently, only about 50% of the city has been uncovered, and many of its secrets are still waiting to be discovered. During our guided visit, we will explore the most important areas, such as the main plaza, sacred temples, Inca houses, storehouses (granaries), the ceremonial sector and its altars, the famous agricultural terraces, and the remarkable llama sector, where the builders represented this sacred animal on massive stone walls.
We will also enjoy a beautiful sunset over the mountains, and if we are lucky, we may see condors soaring above the valley. In the evening, our cook will surprise us with a delicious cup of hot chocolate accompanied by cookies and popcorn, followed by a tasty dinner. Afterward, we will head to our comfortable tents to rest and recover energy for the next day.
At the Choquequirao campsite, restrooms and cold-water showers are available.

DAY 3: Choquequirao – Abra San Juan – Yanama – Eco Lodge Majestic Sky Domes
This third day begins very early. Around 6:00 am, we will wake up, and after breakfast, we will start the most challenging day of the route.
The day begins with a 30-minute uphill hike toward Abra Choquequirao. We will follow a beautiful trail surrounded by lush vegetation through the Cloud Forest (Montane Forest). As we continue, the weather will gradually become warmer. Along the route, we will stop at an area known as Palmayoc, where we will enjoy our lunch.
After lunch and a short rest, we will continue along sections with impressive cliffs. The views in this area are incredible, and we will walk surrounded by native forests and bamboo. The trail will then lead us to Abra San Juan (4,150 meters / 13,615 feet). From this stunning viewpoint, we will enjoy breathtaking landscapes and admire an impressive group of mountains such as Sacsarayoc, Pumasillo, and Choquetecarpo, all with peaks rising above 5,000 meters (16,404 feet).
After taking photos and enjoying a well-deserved rest at San Juan Pass, we will begin a 3-hour descent to the bottom of the valley near the farming community of Yanama (3,375 meters / 11,072 feet), which we expect to reach around 4:00 pm.
Upon arrival in Yanama, our vehicle will be waiting to take us on a 2-hour drive to our lodge located in the Sahuayaco area. In the evening, our cook will surprise us with a delicious dinner. Later, if the sky is clear, we will admire a spectacular star-filled sky while enjoying a warm bonfire. Finally, you will sleep peacefully in our comfortable panoramic wooden eco-dome.

DAY 4: Eco Lodge Sky Domes – Llactapata – Hydroelectric Station – Aguas Calientes Town
The day begins with breakfast at 6:00 am. Afterward, just 5 minutes from the lodge, we will take part in a Coffee Experience Tour. This activity lasts approximately 1 hour and takes place on a local farm owned by one of the residents of the area.
During this unique experience, you will be accompanied by a coffee expert who will teach you the entire coffee production process. You will learn hands-on how to harvest, wash, peel, dry, roast, grind, brew, and taste delicious organic coffee prepared by yourself. It is truly a unique and unforgettable experience.
After the coffee experience, we have two options to continue our journey:
Option 1: Hiking via Llactapata
We will hike for about 1 hour to reach the Lucmabamba sector, where an original Inca Trail begins. From here, we will hike uphill for approximately 2 hours until reaching the Llactapata Archaeological Site. The trail passes through lush cloud forest, featuring abundant vegetation and a wide variety of orchids.
At Llactapata, your guide will explain the history and importance of this site during Inca times. From here, we will have a distant view of Machu Picchu. After a well-deserved rest, we will descend for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to the Aobamba Valley. We will cross an ancient bridge and then continue walking on flat terrain for another 30 minutes until we reach the Hydroelectric Station at approximately 1:00 pm.
Option 2: Visit to Cocalmayo Hot Springs
If a traveler feels tired and prefers not to hike this section, there is a second option: traveling by vehicle from the lodge to the Hydroelectric Station. Along the way, we can stop at the Cocalmayo Hot Springs, arriving around 9:00 am.
Here, you will enjoy the thermo-medicinal waters for approximately 2 hours. This site is located in a beautiful subtropical jungle setting and features three large pools with crystal-clear water emerging from underground springs. The water temperature ranges between 38°C and 45°C (100°F–113°F).
These medicinal waters are believed to help with skin conditions, rheumatism, and joint pain, while also providing natural hydrotherapy and relaxation. After enjoying this relaxing experience, we will continue by vehicle to the Hydroelectric Station, where we will have lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch (for both options), we will continue hiking along the banks of the Urubamba River for approximately 3 hours until reaching the town of Aguas Calientes. Along the way, you will be able to admire the peaks of the Sacred Mountains, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu. The trail follows the railway tracks, and around 5:30 pm we will arrive in Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
Dinner will be served at a tourist restaurant. During dinner, your guide will provide important information about the following day — the most important day of your journey — as you will visit the Wonder of the World, Machu Picchu.
After dinner, it is recommended to go to bed early in order to depart in the early morning and arrive at Machu Picchu as early as possible.

DAY 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
This is the most important day of your journey. We will begin our final and unforgettable day very early in order to reach Machu Picchu and have the opportunity to enjoy the sunrise over the citadel.
After breakfast, we will leave our hotel at 6:00 am and walk to the bus station (2,000 meters above sea level). From there, we will take a 30-minute bus ride along a zigzagging road up to the Inca Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (2,400 meters above sea level).
Upon arrival at this incredible site, we will begin our guided tour, which lasts approximately 2 hours and is led by our professional guide. During the tour, your guide will explain the history of the site while visiting the most fascinating and magical sectors that have made Machu Picchu one of the Wonders of the World. You will also have enough time to take the famous panoramic photo of the citadel.
After the guided tour, and depending on availability, you will have the option to hike along the original Inca trail to the summit of Huayna Picchu Mountain (2,700 meters above sea level) to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.
In the afternoon, after fully experiencing Machu Picchu, we will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes. Here, you will have free time to have lunch at one of the town’s excellent restaurants, explore the town, or visit the hot springs located about 10 minutes away.
At 4:20 pm, we will board the return train to Ollantaytambo, arriving at approximately 6:00 pm. Our transfer will be waiting for you there and will take you by tourist bus back to the city of Cusco, arriving around 8:00 pm. Finally, we will drop you off at your comfortable hotel in Cusco.

1. IS WATER INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?
Yes, we understand that proper hydration during the hike is very important, so you do not need to worry about this. Please just bring your own water for the first morning of the tour.
After that, our staff will provide water throughout the entire trek. The water is collected from the campsite supply, then boiled and cooled to ensure it is clean and safe to drink. You will be able to refill your bottle at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
So, no worries — the water will always be clean and safe to drink.
2. WHAT MEALS WILL I HAVE DURING THE TOUR?
We understand your curiosity about the quality of the food you will enjoy during your trip. For your peace of mind, we include all meals and snacks throughout the entire trek — even the final lunch after your visit to Machu Picchu is included. For this last lunch, you will have the option to dine at a good restaurant in the town of Aguas Calientes. All reviews and feedback from our clients guarantee and demonstrate that our meals are excellent.
All food is prepared using fresh ingredients purchased at the local market in Cusco the day before the trip. Everything is transported by our muleteers and then prepared by our cook. We do not use canned or dehydrated food. Everything is fresh, healthy, and delicious!
Each cook is professionally trained to prepare the best breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. Meals are served daily, beginning with a hearty breakfast in the morning. You will then receive snacks to enjoy along the trail. At midday, you will have a satisfying lunch. 5. WHY ARE PERMITS SOLD OUT SO FAST?
Unfortunately, many travelers are unaware of the 500 permits daily limit for this route. Furthermore, most hikers are unaware that this limit applies not only to travelers who enter the famous route every day, but also to all service personnel required by authorized agencies such as: guides, cooks, and porters.
These service personnel are of vital importance for the excursion since thanks to them, you will be supplied with everything needed such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed during the hike.
So, due to this regulation, the tickets required for a group of travelers will need to be always Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
Now that you know the reason behind the great demand, it is clear the need to reserve your permits as soon as possible, so for this you will need a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government to operate the Inca Trail, like ours Incredible Peru Tours – IPT.
6. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE, COOK, AND PORTERS?
Tipping is not mandatory, and there is no fixed amount required. However, if you wish, you may offer a tip at the end of the tour to your guides, cooks, and porters.
As you can see, this is completely optional and voluntary. Any amount you consider appropriate will be greatly appreciated by our staff for their dedication and service.

The weather along the Inca Trail is very unpredictable. It is impossible to say exactly what kind of weather you will experience during your tour. No matter which month you travel, be sure to bring waterproof clothing such as a rain jacket or a good rain poncho.
At night, temperatures tend to drop, especially on the second night of the trek.
During the dry season (April to November), early mornings are often cloudy and can be quite cold. As the morning progresses, the clouds usually clear and the sun comes out, making it quite warm. Sun protection, insect repellent, and a good hat are essential. However, keep in mind that it can sometimes rain in June and be sunny in December.
During the rainy season (mid-November to mid-April), rainfall is more frequent and consistent. That said, do not be surprised if you experience sunny days even during this season. February is typically the rainiest month, and traveling during this time is not recommended.
Remember, bringing a rain poncho is highly recommended regardless of the season you choose to travel. Also, keep in mind that when it rains, the ancient stones along the trail can become slippery. Therefore, it is very important to wear hiking shoes with good traction and consider using trekking poles with rubber tips for added stability.
8. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET SICK FROM ALTITUDE SICKNESS?
Don’t worry! All of our guides are properly trained to assist you if you experience altitude sickness. Each guide carries an oxygen tank and a first aid kit, ensuring that you will be carefully evaluated and properly attended to, allowing you to continue your hike whenever possible. In addition, all of our staff are prepared to handle emergency situations.
After receiving assistance, if you still feel unwell and are unable to continue the trek, the guide will make the best decision for you—whether to continue or return. For us, your safety and health always come first.
If you need to return, do not worry. You still have the option to rejoin your group by traveling to Aguas Calientes Town and from there going up to Machu Picchu very early on the 5th day. You can meet your group again at the entrance area to visit Machu Picchu and not miss the opportunity to explore it. Please note that this option may involve additional charges.
9. IF I HAVE ALREADY PAID MY FIRST INSTALLMENT AND DECIDE TO CANCEL, WILL I RECEIVE A REFUND?
Unfortunately, no. We are unable to provide any refunds or date changes for tours paid in installments. All pre-payments of USD $200.00 are non-refundable and non-transferable, as this amount is immediately invested in all the necessary procedures and reservations required to operate your tour, including the purchase of permits and entrance tickets for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu.
These procedures are carried out with the Ministry of Culture of Peru (the Peruvian government authority responsible for the administration of the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu).

10. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MACHU PICCHU ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE AND MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
Our tour includes the entrance ticket to the Machu Picchu Archaeological Site. This includes a guided tour of approximately 2 hours through the most important and fascinating areas of Machu Picchu, led by our professional guide.
Machu Picchu (2,430 m / 7,972 ft above sea level) is the famous Inca citadel and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The guided visit allows you to explore its temples, terraces, plazas, and main ceremonial areas while learning about its history and significance.
The Machu Picchu Mountain is a large mountain located next to the Archaeological Site. It rises to approximately 3,000 m (9,843 ft) above sea level and features an original Inca trail leading to its summit.
Machu Picchu Mountain can be hiked independently in approximately 3 hours round trip (ascent and descent). From the summit, you will enjoy a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the entire sanctuary and surrounding mountains.
As you can see, this is an optional hike. If you wish, you can do it after your visit to Machu Picchu on the 5th day. Entry is only allowed in the morning, and we will provide you with an additional entrance ticket for the mountain.
The entrance fee for Machu Picchu Mountain is $80 USD. We strongly recommend reserving it at the time you book your tour, as availability is very limited (only 400 people per day are allowed to hike this mountain).
11. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUAYNA PICCHU MOUNTAIN AND MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
Huayna Picchu Mountain
Huayna Picchu is the iconic peak that appears in the background of most classic photos of Machu Picchu.
- The hike to the summit takes approximately 45 minutes, climbing narrow and steep Inca stone steps.
- From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Machu Picchu Citadel and its surroundings.
- It is one of the most popular hikes, so tickets usually need to be reserved months in advance.
- Only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, as established by the Ministry of Culture in Cusco.
- Tickets are personal and non-transferable.
This hike is shorter but steeper and more adventurous, making it ideal for travelers looking for a thrilling experience.
Machu Picchu Mountain
Machu Picchu Mountain is an excellent alternative to Huayna Picchu.
- The hike to the summit takes approximately 1.5 hours.
- From the top, you reach a higher viewpoint, offering an incredible panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.
- It is ideal for travelers who prefer a less steep climb or were unable to secure a Huayna Picchu ticket.
- Entry is limited to 400 people per day, but tickets rarely sell out. We simply reserve your spot when purchasing your entrance tickets.
- The trail has a gentler incline, making it more suitable for those who are afraid of heights. However, the route is longer, which makes it physically challenging in its own way.
Both mountains offer spectacular views — the choice depends on whether you prefer a shorter, steeper adventure (Huayna Picchu) or a longer, less steep panoramic hike (Machu Picchu Mountain).
12. DO I NEED TO BRING EXTRA MONEY FOR MY TOUR?
Yes, only if you would like to purchase additional items such as snacks (cookies, dried fruit, chocolates, etc.) or extra drinks like sodas, beer, or energy drinks, as these products are available at small local shops along the trail.
There is also the option to take a hot shower on the first day for an additional cost. If you would like to buy souvenirs or travel mementos, you can do so at the Artisan Market in Aguas Calientes Town.
Additionally, on the evening of the 4th day, you may choose to visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes. The entrance fee is 20 Peruvian soles.
For these reasons, we recommend bringing between 200 and 300 Peruvian soles in cash. You may not need to spend all of it, but in case of an emergency, it is important to have enough cash available.
13. WILL I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWER DURING THE TREK? WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO RESTROOM FACILITIES?
Yes, you will have the opportunity to take cold showers at the campsite areas along the route.
Regarding restroom facilities, you will have access to basic sanitary services at each campsite.
14. WHAT TIME DO WE RETURN TO CUSCO?
On the last day, after visiting Machu Picchu, we will take a 25-minute bus ride down to Aguas Calientes Town. We will have lunch at a local restaurant, and then board the train for a 1 hour and 45-minute journey to the Ollantaytambo Train Station.
Upon arrival, our private transportation will be waiting to take you on a 2-hour drive back to the City of Cusco.
The group will arrive in Cusco between 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., depending on the train departure time from Aguas Calientes.
