Pick up from your hotel in Cusco City at 5:00 a.m. in our transportation and then ride to CACHORA (2,909 m.a.s.l./9,543 ft.), a village where we will have breakfast and prepare our pack before the 3-hour walk. We start our hike around 9:00. From there, the first 2-hour walks down a beautiful path, there are spectacular views of the valley and the river. The road is surrounded by lovely plants and flowers such as begonias, orchids, cacti and you can see some typical birds, and we arrive at the beautiful viewpoint called CAPULIYOC (2,915 m.a.s.l./9,561 feet), from there, we will have the privilege of spectacular views of the peaks of the Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora snowies (mountains over 5,400 m.a.s.l.). At this point it’s time to enjoy our snacks, take some photos of the impressive views of the river and the canyon that stretches through the valley. From there we descend a unique zigzag path for another 2 hours to reach the lunch spot. Finally around 13:00 we have lunch. There is time to relax, rest and have a refreshing tea, before arriving ready to hike again for 2 more hours downwards, until we reach our campsite located in CHIQUISCA (1,836 m.a.s.l./6,023 feet) approximately at 17:00, where we will spend the night.

Throughout the day we will see a great variety of bromeliads, orchids and stands of bamboo, we also hope to see birds such as: clockwork bird, toucans and a great variety of hummingbirds. From our campsite we walk for about 1 hour to descend to the canyon’s bottom, called PLAYA ROSALINAS and the magnificent APURIMAC river (1,550 m.a.s.l./5,084 ft). From there the most difficult section of the trek will probably start due to the ascent; a strong 2 hours climb to SANTA ROSA (2,095 m.a.s.l./6,873 feet) where we will have time to take a refreshing break. From SANTA ROSA we continue uphill for another 2 hours towards MARAMPATA (2,913 m.a.s.l. / 9,557ft), a flat terrain where we can rest and enjoy the views of the Apurímac canyon and the famous Inca site of Choquequirao. There you have lunch and can use the facilities (bathrooms and laundry room). After lunch we continue hiking for another one hour to reach the campsite located just outside the great Inca site of CHOQUEQUIRAO (3,110 m.a.s.l./10,120 ft) and we spend the evening in the ruins, seeing a nice sunset over the mountains, and if we are lucky spot condors soaring close to the valley below. DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO RUINS – CHOQUEQUIRAO PASS – MAIZAL

After breakfast we will tour the mysterious Inca site of CHOQUEQUIRAO, where our professional guide will explain about the history of this magnificent Inca citadel. Originally discovered in the 17th century by the Spanish, it was abandoned and forgotten until recent years when tourism raised the site’s profile and exploration began. Even with this growing interest only 25% of the citadel has been explored and many of its secrets are still waiting to be discovered. Currently we can visit the most important areas such as the main square, the Inca houses, the granaries, the ceremonial sector and its altars, the famous terraces and the great sector of the Llama where Incas depicted this sacred Andean animal in their buildings. After our main visit, you have extra time to explore and enjoy the place by yourselves, after this, we continue with the hike, walking uphill to the highest point for this day, called CHOQUEQUIRAO PASS located at 3,300 m.a.s.l. or 10,890ft. Then we will descend until the deepest point of the small canyon known as Rio Blanco (1,900 m.a.s.l./6,234f), on the way we will pass Pinchiunuyoj, a small archaeological site. From Río Blanco we ascend for about 3 hours and during this time we can see different species of birds, different varieties of orchids and the local coca leaves plantations, finally reaching our campsite in the place called MAIZAL (3,000 m.a.s.l. / 9,900 feet).

Walking time: 4-5 hours

Distance to travel: 10 km.

Weather: hot

DAY 4: MAIZAL-SAN JUAN PASS – YANAMA.

Today after a very good breakfast we will start an excellent journey of walking on a path surrounded by vegetation and climbing flowers for 3 1/2 hours. Along the way you can see evidence of mines that were exploited time ago, but are no longer used. As we continue and ascend, weather will become a bit colder and we will hike through the remains of an Inca trail. This trail takes us to the pass called SAN JUAN (4,200 m.a.s.l./13,780ft). From this beautiful place you can see a wonderful landscape with a massive chain of mountains such as Pumasillo, Sacsarayoc and Choquetecarpo, the last one peaks over 5,000m.a.s.l./16,404 ft. You will also see the glaciers and many mountains that surround them. After some photos and a break at the San Juan pass, we head downwards and in the distance find another recently discovered Inca ruin, its name is Corihuayrachina and the equally interesting ancient silver mines of Mina Victoria. We continue descending for 3 hours north into the valley of the Yanama River, following a high trail that crosses escarpments and provides another excellent opportunity to point condors. We camp next to the river in the little Andean village of YANAMA (3,530 m.a.s.l./11,581 ft.). In the afternoon once again our cook will prepare a tea time for us and after that a delicious dinner.

Walking time: 6-7 hours

Distance to travel: 10 km.

Weather: hot

Altitudes: 3,000 m.a.s.l. up to 4,200 m.a.s.l. down to 3,530 m.a.s.l. and then 4,200 m.a.s.l.Accommodation: Campsite

Day 5: YANAMA – YANAMA PASS – TOTORA- COLLPAMPA – LORETA LA PLAYA.

After an early breakfast, we do the Yanama Valley trail, as we ascend we find a more arid environment where       the local grasses and strongest plants can survive. We start climbing slowly to the highest point of the entire trek, this pass is known as the YANAMA Pass (4,670 m.a.s.l /15,410 feet), once again the view from here is quite impressive, surrounded by snow-covered mountains like the Sacsarayoj and the Padreyoj mountain and if we are lucky we will even see a condor flying. After a short stop, from this pass we make our way down into the valley and back  into warmer climates. About 1 hour beyond the pass we arrive at a small community called TOTORA at 3,630 m.a.s.l. or 11,979 feet, to have our lunch. After, during the afternoon, we will frequently enjoy the view of the snow-capped Salkantay (6,264 m.a.s.l.) and Pintuyu (5,450 m.a.s.l.) and we continue descending for 2 hours to COLLPAMPA (2,750 m.a.s.l.) where our transportation will be waiting to take us in 30 minutes to our Lodge (Ecological Domes with private bathroom and hot water). When we arrive we will begin to notice a change – now that we are close to Machu Picchu the villages are larger and better supplied, there are also more tourists coming from the route of the Salkantay Trek and converging at this point.

This day around 7:00 am we will wake up to a coca leaves tea; and then we will have breakfast at 8:00 am. Then take a walk through the area and visit the local plantations of bananas, avocados, oranges, passion fruit, papaya, medicinal plants and others. These plantations are the livelihood of local population, especially the coffee plantations, production that is exported to the United States and many countries in Europe and Asia, which is why coffee is the main agricultural industry in the area. There we will have the chance to visit a local organic coffee farm, to savor the freshly prepared coffee with that exquisite aroma of freshly roasted and ground coffee… you will really enjoy this experience. After and around 11:00 am we return to our Lodge where you can relax. Then, at noon there is the delicious lunch served in the dining room of our Lodge. After enjoying the facilities of our Lodge, we board our vehicle around 1:00 pm. for a 1 hour and 30 min ride to the Hydroelectric Power Plant, arriving at 2:30 pm. To resume our hike, there the route follows the train tracks and near the banks of the Urubamba River. On the way we will tour the archaeological site known as Intihuatana, which has an ancient sundial from the Inca period, carved out of a large natural rock. From there, the Sacred Mountains such as Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu can be seen. The trek continues going through the Cloud Forest with its very exuberant landscape, presenting a great variety of plants and a large number of orchids. 5. WHY ARE PERMITS SOLD OUT SO FAST?

Unfortunately, many travelers are unaware of the 500 permits daily limit for this route. Furthermore, most hikers are unaware that this limit applies not only to travelers who enter the famous route every day, but also to all service personnel required by authorized agencies such as: guides, cooks, and porters.

These service personnel are of vital importance for the excursion since thanks to them, you will be supplied with everything needed such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed during the hike.

So, due to this regulation, the tickets required for a group of travelers will need to be always Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
Now that you know the reason behind the great demand, it is clear the need to reserve your permits as soon as possible, so for this you will need a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government to operate the Inca Trail, like ours Incredible Peru Tours – IPT.

6. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE, COOK AND PORTERS?

Tips are not mandatory, there is no exact amount. Only if you wish, at the end of the tour you can give tips for the tour guides, cooks and porters. This is something additional and totally voluntary, really what you consider fair will be highly appreciated by the Service Personnel.

7. WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE ON THE INCA TRAIL AND MACHU PICCHU?

Weather is very unpredictable along the Inca Trail, it is impossible to say exactly what type of climate you will encounter during the Trek. No matter what month you travel to the Inca Trail, make sure to have waterproof clothing on hand such as a rainproof jacket or a good rain poncho.

At night temperature tends to drop especially the second night, since the Campsite is located at more than 3,600 meters above sea level.

During the day, many people are surprised to learn that in the 3rd and 4th day the Inca Trail has a subtropical climate. The area extends within the High Forest, known as the Cloud Forest or Mountain Forest, which is full of exuberant vegetation with the presence of orchids, ferns, bromeliads and some mosquitoes.

Machu Picchu is located at 2,400 meters above sea level, it is a considerably lower altitude (hotter and more humid) than Cusco City and many other places. In Machu Picchu the temperature could reach 25 degrees Celsius. It is surrounded by high mountain peaks, often shrouded in mist. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the Spanish never discovered it.

During dry season (April to November), early mornings are cloudy and can be cold. As the morning hours pass the clouds clear and the sun rises, so it can get quite hot. Sun protection, insect repellent and a good hat are essential. However, keep in mind that sometimes it can be rainy in June and sunny in December.

During rainy season (mid-November to mid-April), rainfall is very constant. However, don’t be surprised if in this season some days are sunny. February is the month with the most pourings, so during this month the Inca Trail is closed.

Remember a rain poncho is highly recommended, no matter what season you decide to travel. Also consider that when it rains the old stones on the path become slippery, so it is very important to wear shoes with a good tread and perhaps a rubber-tipped cane.

8. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET ILL FROM ALTITUDE SICKNESS?

Don’t worry! All our Guides are trained in case you get sick with this condition. All our Guides carry an oxygen tank and a First Aid Kit, this ensures that you are very well evaluated and cared for, which will allow you to continue with the hike. In addition, all our staff are prepared in case of Emergency. If after being treated, you still feel very bad and cannot continue with the trek, the Guide will make the best decision whether to continue or return. For us your Safety and Health come first.

9. IF I ALREADY PAID MY FIRST INSTALLMENT AND DECIDE TO CANCEL, WILL I BE REFUNDED?

Unfortunately we will not be able to make any type of refund or date changes for Tours that are paid in Installments. All Pre-Payments of USD $200.00 are non-refundable, nor transferable, since this money will be invested immediately in all the Procedures and Reservations required for the Tour, as well as in the purchase of Permits and Tickets for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. These procedures will be carried out at the Ministry of Culture of Peru (Branch of the Peruvian Government Managing the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu).

We understand that unexpected things happen that are out of your control, but we cannot make exceptions. You can read more about our Change and Cancellation Policies on our website: http://inca-trail.tours/es/terminos-y-condiciones/

10. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF MACHU PICCHU AND THE MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?

Our Tour includes the Entrance Ticket to the Archaeological Site of Machu Picchu. This means a guided tour of about 2 hours through the most interesting places of Machu Picchu, which will be led by our Professional Guide.

Machu Picchu Mountain is a large mountain that is next to the Archaeological Site of Machu Picchu (2,400 m.a.s.l.). This Mountain has an old Inca Trail to reach its top, which is 3,000 meters above sea level. You can do this walk on your own in an average of 3 hours between going up and down. From its top you will have an impressive 360° panoramic view of the entire place.

As you can see this is an optional path; you can do it after visiting Machu Picchu on the 2nd day, since visitors only enter it in the morning; so we will give you an additional Entrance Ticket for this Mountain.

The Entrance price to this Mountain is $60 dollars, and we recommend to reserve it at the time of reservation to the Inca Trail, since permits are very limited (only 400 people per day can climb this Mountain).

11. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HUAYNA PICCHU MOUNTAIN AND THE MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?

  • Huayna Picchu Mountain: The hike to the top takes approximately 45 minutes, along the narrow and steep Inca stairs. Once there, you can see the Machu Picchu citadel and its surroundings. This is the famous peak in the background of every iconic photo of Machu Picchu. At the summit, Huayna Picchu is always a top item on most Machu Picchu visitor lists, which means you usually need to book months in advance. Only a limited number of people can hike this mountain each day. Throughout this hike, you will have stunning views of the Machu Picchu ruins. The limited number of tickets is set by the Culture Ministry in Cusco, not by us. This is completely out of our hands unfortunately. Tickets for this mountain are not transferable.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain: The walk to its top takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once there, you get a much higher vantage point, enjoying an amazing view of the Machu Picchu Citadel and its surroundings. This hike is a great alternative to Huayna Picchu. Ideal for those who don’t want the hassle of fighting for a ticket, or were unable to obtain one. Technically, permits for Machu Picchu Mountain are also limited to 400 per day, but they rarely sell out. We simply need to reserve a when we purchase your entrance tickets. This hike is great because it will also take you high up like Huayna Picchu, which offers great views. This trek has an easier incline (also making it accessible for those who fear the heights of Huayna Picchu), but the path is much longer, making it just as challenging in its own way.

12. DO I NEED TO BRING ADDITIONAL MONEY TO MY TOUR?

Yes, only if you want to buy snacks such as cookies, dehydrated fruit, chocolates, etc. or additional drinks such as sodas, beers or an energy beverage, because it is possible to buy these products in small stores in the area for the first 2 days.

In addition, there is the option of taking a hot shower the first day for 10 soles. Also, if you want to buy a souvenir or memories from the trek, there is the Craft Market in Aguas Calientes village. There is also the additional option of enjoying the Thermo-medicinal Baths of the Village, the Entrance Price is 20 soles. For all this we recommend that you have between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles. You may not need to spend any of this money, but in case of an Emergency, make sure to have enough cash.

13. WILL I HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE SHOWERS DURING THE ROUTE? WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO BATHROOM SERVICES?

Yes, you will be able to take cold showers in the Camping Areas.

Regarding Bathroom Services, there will be access to them. At the beginning of the hike, in the places where you will have lunch, when arriving at Machu Picchu and in the Camping area these facilities are available.

14. WHAT TIME WILL WE RETURN TO CUSCO?

On the last day, after visiting Machu Picchu, we will take a bus for 25 minutes to the village of Aguas Calientes. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and then go for a train ride of 1 hour and 45 minutes until the Ollantaytambo Train Station. There, our transportation will be waiting to take you for a two-hour trip back to Cusco City. The group will be arriving between 7:00 and 10:30 p.m., depending on the time the Aguas Calientes Village Train leaves.
