Perfect Trip: Hikes and Relaxing Time This was an incredible experience. Each hike always had an amazing ending, in terms of views and in terms of places to stay. Our guide (Herbert) is a fantastic person and would recommended him with my eyes closed. He was always looking out for us and making sure everything was smooth and ready. This trip is the perfect balance between challenging hikes and relaxing time. Peruvians are one of the best people I’ve met and made our trip memorable. The food, traditional and fantastic. I would recommend to make the reservation with at least two months in advance, so that the reservations (restaurants, hotels, and transportation) are all ready and aligned. We did the reservation with three months and it was perfect.

Great trek, thanks Hector! We had an amazing track alongside Pat towards Machu Picchu. The scenery was amazing as was the food, but the experience was made a lot better by our guide Hector and the team at IPT. While the track was difficult at times Hector was very accommodating and encouraging. Hector provided lots of information about the Incas and his passion for the history was great to experience. Highly recommend this trek!!

Excelente experiencia.!!!

I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours. Using Incredible Peru Tours, my companion and I reserved two tours: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Prior to making a reservation, we discovered that they were really organised and helpful. Every little detail was meticulously handled by Fredy, and communication with him was a breeze. Considering everything we did, both excursions were excellent and incredibly affordable. Luis, our guide, is incredibly kind and informed. Since our time in Cusco is extended, we will most likely do another tour with this company. To anyone travelling to this stunning nation, I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours.

TOUR DETAILS

Information

INTRODUCTION

This excursion begins with pickup from your hotel in the city of Cusco or in the Sacred Valley, from where we depart by private vehicle to the trekking starting point at Piskacucho, also known as Km. 82. Along the 45-kilometer route, travelers pass through scenically rich landscapes and a continuous series of Inca constructions that line the trail all the way to the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

This is a multi-day trek that follows the original historic route to Machu Picchu, leading to the archaeological site recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Its stone buildings, terraces, and ceremonial enclosures hold centuries of Inca history within a high-altitude setting of dense vegetation. The complex receives around 2 million visitors per year, a figure that speaks to its standing as Peru’s foremost archaeological destination.

Our team will accompany you at every stage of the journey, with a specialized guide and full logistical support so you can focus entirely on the experience.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Reserve your excursion as early as possible, as spots fill up quickly.
  • Arrive in Cusco at least one day before your trek to acclimatize to the altitude. Keep in mind that the city sits at 11,154 ft. (3,400 m.a.s.l.).
  • Review your personal gear and packing list ahead of your departure date.
  • Visit our main office in the Historic Center of Cusco the evening before your trek at 7:00 p.m. Your guide will lead an informational briefing covering the route, recommended equipment, and trail conditions.
  • Leave any luggage you won’t need on the excursion free of charge at our baggage storage at the main office.

DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO CITY – MOLLEPATA – CHALLACANCHA – SORAYPAMPA –  HUMANTAY LAKE

Pickup from your hotel takes place at 5:00 a.m. Your guide and cook will meet you before departing in our private van. The drive takes approximately 2 hours, passing snow-capped peaks and valleys with colorful vegetation, until our first stop in the town of Mollepata (2,900 m.a.s.l.), where breakfast is served.

After breakfast, we continue by road for another 45 minutes to Challacancha (3,600 m.a.s.l.), the trekking starting point. Here we meet the muleteer and horses, load the equipment, and begin walking around 9:30 a.m. The trail follows an ancient water channel that still supplies clean water to local communities, covering approximately 10 km over 3 hours to Soraypampa (3,900 m.a.s.l.), where lunch is served and the first night’s accommodation is located.

In the afternoon, after a rest, we leave the lodge for a short uphill walk of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to Humantay Lake (4,200 m.a.s.l.), one of the most photographed natural landmarks on the route. Back at the lodge, sunset views over the glaciers are a highlight, and on clear nights the southern sky offers outstanding stargazing conditions. Dinner closes the day.

  • Walking time: approximately 5 hours
  • Distance: 11 km / 6.8 mi.
  • Weather: cool and windy
  • Altitudes: Cusco 3,350 m.a.s.l. / Mollepata 2,900 m.a.s.l. / Challacancha 3,600 m.a.s.l. / Soraypampa 3,900 m.a.s.l. / Humantay Lake 4,200 m.a.s.l.
  • Accommodation: Eco-Lodge Mama Andrea, cabin in Soraypampa.
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS – HUAYRACMACHAY – CHAULLAY

The cook wakes the group at 5:00 a.m. with coca leaf tea. After breakfast, we begin the most demanding day of the entire route. We set off from Soraypampa on a gradual uphill trail for 1 hour through the valley to Salkantay Pampa (4,200 m.a.s.l.), where we stop with views of the glacier massif. We then continue for another 2 hours and 30 minutes of ascent over rocky terrain to Salkantay Pass (4,630 m.a.s.l. / 15,190 ft.), the highest point of the trek.

From the pass, direct views open toward Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m.a.s.l. / 20,574 ft.), the second highest peak in the Cusco region, and Humantay Mountain (5,400 m.a.s.l. / 17,716 ft.). The descent follows a rocky path down to Huayracmachay, where lunch is served. The afternoon trail continues downward into the mountain jungle zone, with native vegetation and occasional condor sightings. We arrive in the town of Chaullay (2,900 m.a.s.l. / 9,514 ft.) around 4:00 p.m. Hot chocolate, coffee, cookies, and popcorn are served before dinner.

  • Walking time: approximately 8 hours
  • Distance: 19 km / 11.8 mi.
  • Weather: cool and windy

  • Accommodation: Eco-Hostel Salkantay, spacious room with private bathroom in Chaullay.
DAY 3: CHAULLAY – COLPAPAMPA – PLAYA SAHUAYACO

After breakfast we begin a more relaxed hiking day. Within 15 minutes of departure we pass through the small town of Colpapampa, where the vegetation shifts noticeably: fruit trees, waterfalls, and a wide variety of birds fill the surroundings. This stretch is one of the best spots on the route to sight the Andean cock-of-the-rock, one of Peru’s most emblematic bird species.

The trail descends through the morning along the mountain jungle zone, with lush vegetation and humid air, arriving at midday to the Majestic Sky Domes lodge where lunch is served. In the afternoon, travelers can join a hands-on organic coffee tour at a local farm, learning the full production process from harvest to cup: picking, washing, peeling, drying, roasting, grinding, and brewing. A visit to the Cocalmayo hot springs is also available at an additional transport cost. The evening closes with dinner and, on clear nights, a bonfire under a sky full of stars.

  • Walking time: approximately 5 hours
  • Distance: 19 km / 11.4 mi.
  • Weather: cool to warm
  • Altitudes: Chaullay 2,900 m.a.s.l. / Colpapampa 2,900 m.a.s.l. / Playa Sahuayaco 2,100 m.a.s.l.
  • Accommodation: Eco-Lodge Majestic Sky Domes, panoramic wooden dome with private bathroom in Playa Sahuayaco.
DAY 4: PLAYA SAHUAYACO  – LLACTAPATA – HYDROELECTRIC – AGUAS CALIENTES VILLAGE

Breakfast is served around 7:00 a.m. We then set off along a stretch of original Inca trail, climbing for 2 hours to the Llaqtapata archaeological site, where the guide explains the history and significance of the complex during the Inca period. From this vantage point, part of Machu Picchu is visible in the distance.

We continue downhill for 1 hour and 30 minutes to the Aobamba valley, cross an old bridge, and walk another 30 minutes on flat ground to the Hidroeléctrica station (1,900 m.a.s.l.), arriving around 1:00 p.m. for lunch. From here there are two options to continue: board the train to Aguas Calientes (not included, 30-minute ride) or continue on foot along the Urubamba River. The walking route passes by the Intihuatana archaeological site, home to an ancient Inca sundial carved directly into natural rock, with views toward Huayna Picchu and the Machu Picchu massif. The trail runs through dense vegetation rich in orchid species. We arrive in Aguas Calientes (2,000 m.a.s.l.) around 5:30 p.m. Dinner is served at an included local restaurant, during which the guide provides full details for the following day.

  • Walking time: approximately 7 hours
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Weather: warm
  • Altitudes: Playa Sahuayaco 2,100 m.a.s.l. / Llaqtapata 2,840 m.a.s.l. / Hidroeléctrica 1,900 m.a.s.l. / Aguas Calientes 2,000 m.a.s.l.

DAY 5. AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO CITY

The final day begins early. At 5:30 a.m. we leave the hotel and walk to the bus station (2,000 m.a.s.l.), from where we ride the tourist bus for 30 minutes up the switchback road to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Inca Sanctuary (2,400 m.a.s.l.). Arriving early allows visitors to experience the site in the first light of morning before the bulk of daily visitors arrive.

The guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours, covering the history, architecture, and main sectors of the site. After the tour, free time is available to explore independently, take photos, or climb Huayna Picchu Mountain subject to permit availability. In the afternoon, descent to Aguas Calientes is possible by bus or on foot, with free time to have lunch at one of the town’s restaurants.

At 6:00 p.m. we board the return train to Ollantaytambo, arriving at 7:50 p.m. Our private transport then carries the group back to Cusco, with estimated arrival at 9:30 p.m. and final drop-off in the Historic Center of the city.

  • Walking time: approximately 3 hours at Machu Picchu
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Weather: warm
