INTRODUCTION
The Salkantay Trek is the most widely used trekking route to Machu Picchu after the Inca Trail. Over five days, the route combines high-altitude mountain terrain, cloud forest and two of the most significant sites in southern Peru: Humantay Lake and the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
The first day includes a visit to Humantay Lake, situated at the foot of the Humantay snowcapped peak. The first night is spent at Soraypampa in rustic eco-cabins. The second day is the most demanding stretch of the route: the path crosses the slopes of the Salkantay glacier and reaches Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m.a.s.l., the highest point of the trek, before descending toward the Playa Sahuayaco area. The second night is spent at the Eco Lodge’s wooden panoramic Sky Domes, with telescope stargazing available on clear nights.
The third day includes a hands-on coffee experience at a local farm where travelers participate in the full production process: harvesting, washing, peeling, drying, roasting, grinding and brewing organic coffee. The walk continues through cloud forest with orchids, bromeliads and begonias down to the town of Aguas Calientes, where the night is spent at a hotel. The fourth day is dedicated entirely to a guided visit of Machu Picchu, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

DETAILED ITINERARY
DAY 1: CUSCO-MOLLEPATA-CHALLACANCHA-SORAYPAMPA (HUMANTAY LAGOON)
Today’s highlights: Trek from Challacancha to Soraypampa along a stone path beside a functioning Inca water channel. Afternoon visit to Humantay Lake at 4,200 m.a.s.l. with direct views of the Salkantay glacier. On clear nights, the sky above Soraypampa offers exceptional stargazing conditions.
Pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 am. The group travels approximately two hours by private van to the town of Mollepata, where the cook serves the first breakfast of the trek. From Mollepata, transport continues thirty minutes to Challacancha at 3,500 m.a.s.l., the starting point of the walk. The muleteer waits here with the horses and mules to carry the camping equipment and food.
The walk begins around 9:30 am. The path follows a stone trail alongside an ancient water channel that still supplies water to local communities. Three hours and approximately 10 km of walking lead to Soraypampa at 3,900 m.a.s.l., where the cook serves lunch. The area offers wide views over the surrounding canyon.
In the afternoon, after a rest, the group makes the round trip to Humantay Lake at 4,200 m.a.s.l. The ascent takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes. The lake sits at the foot of the Humantay glacier and is one of the most photographed points of the entire route. The return to Soraypampa coincides with sunset over the glaciers. Dinner is served at the campsite eco-cabins.

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA-SALKANTAY PASS-HUAYRACMACHAY-CHAULLAY-LORETA LA PLAYA
Today’s highlights: The most demanding day of the Salkantay Trek. Ascent to Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m.a.s.l. with direct views of the Salkantay and Humantay glaciers. Gradual descent from high-altitude puna into cloud forest, with a visible shift in ecosystems throughout the day. Night at the geodesic domes at Loreta La Playa Lodge.
The cook wakes the group at 5:00 am with coca tea. After breakfast, the walk begins with one hour of gradual ascent through the Salkantay Valley to Pampa Salkantay at 4,200 m.a.s.l., where the group makes a brief stop. From here, two additional hours of climbing through rocky terrain lead to Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m.a.s.l., the highest point of the entire route.
From the pass, panoramic views open over the Salkantay glacier, the second highest mountain in the Cusco region at 6,271 m.a.s.l., and the Humantay glacier at 5,400 m.a.s.l. The rear face of Salkantay, permanently snow-covered at the summit, dominates the landscape on the descent side. Condors soaring above the peaks are a frequent sight during the warmer hours of the morning.
The descent from the pass covers 9 km along a rocky zigzag path to Huayracmachay, where the cook serves lunch. In the afternoon, the route continues downward into the cloud forest, a dense vegetation ecosystem with native plants and a warm, temperate climate, reaching the village of Chaullay at 2,900 m.a.s.l. around 4:00 pm. From Chaullay, the vehicle transfers the group to Loreta La Playa Lodge, arriving at approximately 5:00 pm.
On arrival, the cook serves hot chocolate, coffee, cookies and popcorn. Dinner follows at the lodge.

DAY 3: LORETA LA PLAYA-HYDROELECTRIC-AGUAS CALIENTES VILLAGE
Today’s highlights: Walk along an original Inca Trail section to the Llaqtapata archaeological site, with a distant view of Machu Picchu. Descent through the Aobamba Valley crossing cloud forest with a high concentration of orchids and native plants. En route to Aguas Calientes, the path passes the Intihuatana archaeological site, which preserves an Inca sundial carved into natural rock.
Breakfast is served at 5:00 am. The walk begins along an original Inca Trail section with two hours of ascent to the Llaqtapata archaeological site. The guide covers the function and significance of the site during the Inca Empire. From Llaqtapata, a distant view of Machu Picchu is visible. After a rest, the group descends for one hour and thirty minutes to the Aobamba Valley, crosses an ancient bridge and continues on flat terrain for thirty minutes to the Hidroeléctrica station, arriving around 1:00 pm. Lunch is served at a local tourist restaurant.
From Hidroeléctrica, the group chooses between two options to reach Aguas Calientes. The first is to take the train from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes, a 30-minute journey not included in the tour price. The second is to continue walking for three hours along the railway line on the banks of the Urubamba River. This section passes the Intihuatana archaeological site, which preserves an ancient Inca sundial carved into natural rock, and offers the first views of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain above the valley. The path continues through cloud forest with dense vegetation and a wide variety of orchids, arriving in Aguas Calientes around 5:30 pm.
The night is spent at a hotel in Aguas Calientes. Dinner is included and served at a local tourist restaurant. During the meal, the guide covers the following day’s program: entry times, available circuits inside the citadel and recommendations for the visit. An early night is strongly recommended given the early start on day 4.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES VILLAGE-MACHU PICCHU-OLLANTAYTAMBO-CUSCO
Today’s highlights: Early entry to Machu Picchu ahead of Inca Trail groups and same-day train visitors. Possibility of watching sunrise over the citadel on clear mornings. Optional pre-booked tickets available for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, subject to availability.
After breakfast, the group departs the hotel at 5:30 am and walks to the bus station at 2,000 m.a.s.l. The bus ascends in 30 minutes along the switchback road to the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary at 2,400 m.a.s.l. The guided tour lasts approximately two hours and covers the history of the site, its principal sectors and the factors behind its recognition as a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. After the guided portion, participants have free time to explore independently, take photographs or visit additional areas of the site. Entry to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain requires a pre-booked ticket, subject to availability.
In the afternoon, the group boards the bus back down to Aguas Calientes, a 25-minute ride. There is time for lunch in town before the return train departs around 6:00 pm. The train arrives in Ollantaytambo at 7:50 pm, where agency staff wait to transfer the group by private transport to Cusco, arriving at approximately 9:30 pm. Drop-off at each participant’s hotel marks the end of the Salkantay Trek.

3. DO I NEED PREVIOUS TREKKING EXPERIENCE?

During the tour, we include all meals and snacks needed for the trek, prepared with fresh ingredients purchased at the local market in Cusco before the trip. Our cook prepares varied, healthy, and delicious breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks.
Meals may include pancakes, eggs, fruit, bread, soups, rice, chicken, trout, pasta, vegetables, salads, tea, coffee, and snacks for the hike. After visiting Machu Picchu, the final lunch is also included at a restaurant in Aguas Calientes.

6. ARE THERE DISCOUNTS FOR CHILDREN AND STUDENTS?
Yes, for this Tour we offer discounts and special rates for infants, children and students.
- Infants under 2 years of age in the company of their parents travel free.
- Children between 3 and 8 years of age have a discount of USD 100 only by sending a scanned copy of the Passport at the time of Reservation.
- Students also have a discount of USD 40 in the following cases:

7. WHY ARE PERMITS SOLD OUT SO FAST?
Unfortunately, many travelers are unaware of the 500 permits daily limit for this route. Furthermore, most hikers are unaware that this limit applies not only to travelers who enter the famous route every day, but also to all service personnel required by authorized agencies such as: guides, cooks, and porters.
These service personnel are of vital importance for the excursion since thanks to them, you will be supplied with everything needed such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed during the hike.
So, due to this regulation, the tickets required for a group of travelers will need to be always Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
Now that you know the reason behind the great demand, it is clear the need to reserve your permits as soon as possible, so for this you will need a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government to operate the Inca Trail, like ours Incredible Peru Tours – IPT.
8. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE, COOK AND PORTERS?
Tips are not mandatory, there is no exact amount. Only if you wish, at the end of the tour you can give tips for the tour guides, cooks and porters. This is something additional and totally voluntary, really what you consider fair will be highly appreciated by the Service Personnel.
9. DO I NEED TO BRING ADDITIONAL MONEY TO MY TOUR?
Yes, only if you want to buy snacks such as cookies, dehydrated fruit, chocolates, etc. or additional drinks such as sodas, beers or an energy beverage, because it is possible to buy these products in small stores in the area for the first 2 days.
In addition, there is the option of taking a hot shower the first day for 10 soles. Also, if you want to buy a souvenir or memories from the trek, there is the Craft Market in Aguas Calientes village. There is also the additional option of enjoying the Thermo-medicinal Baths of the Village on the 4th day, the Entrance Price is 20 soles. For all this we recommend that you have between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles. You may not need to spend any of this money, but in case of an Emergency, make sure to have enough cash.
10. WILL I HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE SHOWERS DURING THE ROUTE? WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO BATHROOM SERVICES?
Yes, you will be able to take showers in the Camping Areas:
- 1st Camp (Wayllabamba) – Hot showers available. These are provided on the premises of a local family, who charge 10 Peruvian soles per person.
- 2nd Camp (Pacaymayo) – Very cold showers. We do not recommend taking a shower here, as it could be dangerous, the place generally has a cold climate and also with a high elevation (3,600 m.a.s.l.).
- 3rd Camp (Winay Wayna) – Cold water showers. Despite this situation, some tourists who arrive here usually take a shower, especially when the day is hot and sunny.
Regarding Bathroom Services, there will be access to them. At the beginning of the hike, in the places where you will have lunch, when you arrive at Machu Picchu and in the Camping area we find these facilities.
11. WHAT TIME WILL WE RETURN TO CUSCO?
On the last day, after visiting Machu Picchu, we will take a bus for 25 minutes to the village of Aguas Calientes. Then have lunch at a local restaurant and after a train ride of 1 hour and 45 minutes until the Ollantaytambo Train Station. There a tourist bus will be waiting for a two-hour trip back to Cusco City. We have two train schedules: from 4:20 p.m. or 6:20 p.m. (time to be confirmed depending on Peru Rail availability)
