Itinerary
DÍA 1: CUSCO – KM. 82 (TRAIL HEAD) – WAYLLABAMBA
Highlights of the day: Enjoy the incredible Peruvian Andes… Arrive walking to your first campsite on an easy day enjoying beautiful and enchanting landscapes…
This great Hike begins in Cusco City – Peru. Before leaving the hotel, make sure to have your original passport and valid card if you are a student. Trekkers are picked up by tourist transportation around 5:30 am. from their hotels, for a ride of approximately 3 hours and a half to the beginning point of the Inca Trail. Thus comes a spectacular scenic tour through the mythical Sacred Valley of the Incas with beautiful views of the Urubamba River, picturesque Andean villages and the Inca Fortress of Ollantaytambo. On the route we will have a last stop in Ollantaytambo village where you can do some souvenir shopping or use the restrooms, then we will continue the tour in our bus to reach the Piscacucho area, at approximately 10:00 am.
The Piscacucho village or km. 82 is the Trail Head of the Inca Trail. Here you will meet all the members of the Excursion, including visitors, porters and cook. From this point on you will be accompanied by our native Quechua porters, who will carry all camping equipment. And it is also the place of the first Official Control Post of the Inca Trail where we must show our permits, entrance tickets and passports. After checking in, we will cross a suspended bridge over the Urubamba River (Sacred River).
The first day of the Trail is easy, this will help you in preparation for the following journeys. The hike begins with a slight ascent, and we continue for about two hours on relatively flat terrain following the course of the Urubamba river to the place called Miskay, arriving around 1:00 pm. In Miskay we will have our first lunch, prepared by our cook and served by the staff.
After lunch we will continue the trek to the first Inca Site, called Patallacta, which is an ancient Inca remain, where you can see an impressive group of agricultural terraces. From Patallacta we continue for 2 hours, along the left bank of the Urubamba river. During this part, views of snow-capped peaks such as Wakay Willka, currently known as Veronica, are had. The peak of this snowy is 5,900 meters above sea level / 19,000 feet, and we can also see the Urubamba Mountain Range, which divides the Andes and the Jungle; then we will arrive at the small village of Wayllabamba (3,000 m.a.s.l./ 9,840 feet) around 5:00 p.m. where we will set our camp.
Upon arrival in Wayllabamba, and after settling in the camp, we will have tea time, relaxing and enjoying a hot beverage and some snacks. At night, around 7:30 pm. dinner will be ready, served by our staff. After dinner you will have a well-deserved night of rest in a good sleeping tent.
Walking time: Approximately 5 hours.
Distance to travel: 10 km / 6.50 miles.
Trek Difficulty: Moderate.
Climate: Warm with presence of wind.
Altitudes of the Hike: From 2,700 meters above sea level (Trail Head) going up to 3,000 meters above sea level/9,840 feet. (1st Campsite).
Accommodation: Campsite.
DAY 2: WAYLLABAMBA – WARMIWANUSCA (DEAD WOMAN PASS) – PACAYMAYU
Highlights of the day: Conquer the Dead Woman Pass located at 4,200 m.a.s.l./13,800 feet (the highest point of the trek)… As a reward, enjoy spectacular landscapes and magnificent views of the mountains.
This day you will wake up for a cup of coca tea brought to your tent by our staff, in order to get up early and prepare for the day’s walk, considered by many people as the most difficult day of the trek. Coca leaves are a millenary physical and mental booster in Andean culture. You will reach an altitude of 13,779 feet/4,200 m.a.s.l. at the place known locally as Warmi Wanusca (Dead Woman Pass), the highest point of the Trail. We must hike almost 10 km. going up by steps and then going down about 6 km. more to the campsite area. This day will truly be a test for your adventurous spirit.
After breakfast, we begin this second day, starting from Wayllabamba at approximately 7:00 am, and walking for 4 hours to the highest point of the trek, Dead Woman Pass (4,200 meters above sea level /13,779 feet). The first two hours of the hike are uphill, the route will give you the opportunity to appreciate several species of birds (with luck you can see hummingbirds, hawks and eagles). From there the Trail crosses a beautiful forest in the clouds, along the way you can see many native trees such as Polylepis or Quenua before entering the Puna, an area characterized by grasslands, without trees, a landscape only found at this altitude in the Andes. Hike at your own pace, stop and rest as many times as you like, pause and take a breath, or stop to stretch a muscle. There is no need to worry thanks to our team of enthusiastic Porters and Guides who will help along the route, so you will have all the morale and physical support you need to do it, then reaching the area of Llulluchapampa (3,600 m.a.s.l./11,800 feet)
Llulluchapampa is a beautiful and quiet place, there is a small stream where you will have the option to cool off with fresh water and a chance to refill your water bottles, take a good rest and then we have 2 more hours of trekking, for a last hard climb that will take us to the highest point of the Inca Trail. Then reaching the top, known as Warmiwanusca -the highest point of our hike.
At Warmiwanusca or Dead Woman Pass, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Andes, there we stop for a break enjoying the sights and have time to take unforgettable pictures of the place. Remember this is the highest point of the Inca Trail, where you will feel a great sense of achievement after having conquered this peak. Have a warm coat and a woolen headpiece on hand when you arrive at this place, due to high altitude temperatures can drop very quickly.
From the Dead Woman Pass, the route descends towards the Pacaymayo valley, we continue along the slopes on the left side for two hours of pure descent, until the Pacaymayo (Pacaymayo Valley – hidden river) arriving around the 2:00 p.m., where our lunch place and Campsite is located, at 3,600 m.a.s.l. / 11,811 ft.
Once we arrive at Pacaymayo we have lunch. Afterwards there is time for a long and well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, around 5:00 pm. you will enjoy tea time with a hot beverage and some snacks. At night we will have dinner and spend the night in our comfortable tents.

During the ascent we will stop to tour the small circular Inca Site known as Runkuracay. Following the route we will see two small lagoons and then reach the second high point of the Trail.
In this second Pass, we will rest and take the chance for the traditional pictures of the whole group. From there we will walk down for 1 hour to reach the magnificent Inca site known as Sayacmarca, located at 3,497 meters above sea level. / 11,472 feet, the name means Inaccessible Town and clearly describes the location of the place, perfectly surrounded by rocky precipices.
In Sayacmarca you will have a tour of the place, where our guide will explain everything about this incredible spot. From there we continue for about 30 minutes to the place called Chaquicocha (3,600 masl/11,800 feet), where we will have our delicious lunch and a good rest. There you can use the toilets.
After lunch, we will continue for 1 hour and 30 minutes through the changing cloud forest, full of rare orchids, hanging mosses, bromeliads and ferns. Continuing with our route, we will go through a tunnel carved into the mountain, then a gentle climb will take us to the third Pass, located at 3,700 meters above sea level. / 12,139 feet, offering us fascinating views of several snow-capped peaks and sights of the Urubamba River.
After this third Pass we continue along a splendid stone-paved path made by Inca masons, during the descent we will find the ruins of Phuyupatamarca (Village Above the Clouds). There our guide will elaborate about the magnificent Inca architecture.
From Phuyupatamarca it will be 2 more hours going down to another Inca site known as Intipata (Sun Terraces) located at 2,800 meters above sea level/9,200 feet, a very interesting place with many terraces for agricultural purposes. Then, we continue descending towards our last campsite called Winay Wayna (Forever Young) located at 2,680 meters above sea level. / 8,792 feet, this place is the last official campsite and the most popular, due to its proximity to Machu Picchu. We will arrive there around 5:00 pm. and after settling in you can relax, have a beverage and snacks: hot drinks such as tea, milk chocolate, coffee with some biscuits and popcorn, all served by our staff.
At the campsite, our guide will brief you with valuable and important information about the next day – the most important journey of the trek because there is the tour to our “Wonder” – so that you will be completely ready and prepared for the unforgettable Machu Picchu experience.
We love having very special moments with our visitors, so enjoying our last dinner with the porters and cooks will be very interesting. It is a tradition on the Inca Trail to organize a small ceremony during this last dinner and once again introduce the whole team of porters to the tourists and thank them for the work done (if you want to say a few words of thanks or give them some advice, then you can use this moment to do it). Afterwards, it is convenient going to sleep at a reasonable hour, to wake up in the early hours of the morning and arrive at Machu Picchu ahead of time.

5. WHY DO TICKETS SELL OUT SO FAST?
Unfortunately, many travelers are unaware of the 500 permits daily limit for this route. Furthermore, most hikers are unaware that this limit includes not only travelers who enter the famous route every day, but also to all service personnel required by authorized agencies such as: guides, cooks, and porters.
These service personnel are of vital importance for the excursion since thanks to them, you will be supplied with everything needed such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed during the hike.
So, due to this regulation, the tickets required for a group of travelers will need to be always Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
Now that you know the reason behind the great demand, it is clear the need to reserve permits as soon as possible, so for this you will need a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government to operate the Inca Trail, like ours, Incredible Peru Tours – IPT.
6. HOW MUCH SHOULD I TIP MY GUIDE, COOK AND PORTERS?
Tips are not mandatory, there is no exact amount. Only if you want, at the end of the Trail you can give tips for the tour guides, cooks and porters. This is something additional and totally voluntary, really what you consider fair will be highly appreciated by the Service Personnel.
7. WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE ON THE INCA TRAIL AND MACHU PICCHU?
Weather is very unpredictable along the Inca Trail, it is impossible to say exactly what type of climate you will encounter during the Trek. No matter what month you travel to the Inca Trail, make sure to have waterproof clothing at hand such as a rainproof jacket or a good rain poncho.
At night temperature tends to drop, especially the second night, since the Campsite is located at more than 3,600 meters above sea level/11,800 feet.
During the day, many people are surprised to learn that in the 3rd and 4th day the Inca Trail has a subtropical climate. The area extends within the High Forest, known as the Cloud Forest or Mountain Forest, which is full of exuberant vegetation with the presence of orchids, ferns, bromeliads and some mosquitoes.
Machu Picchu is located at 2,400 meters above sea level/7,900 feet, it is a considerably lower altitude (hotter and more humid) than Cusco City and many other places. In Machu Picchu the temperature could easily reach 25 degrees Celsius. It is surrounded by high mountain peaks, often shrouded in mist. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the Spanish never discovered it.
During dry season (April to November), early mornings are cloudy and can be cold. As the morning hours pass the clouds clear and the Sun rises, so it can get quite hot. Sun protection, insect repellent and a good, wide hat are essential. However, keep in mind that sometimes it can be rainy in June and sunny in December.
During rainy season (mid-November to mid-April), rainfall is very constant. However, don’t be surprised if in this season some days are sunny. February is the month with the most pourings, so during this month the Inca Trail is closed.
Remember a rain poncho is highly recommended, no matter what season you decide to travel. Also consider that when it rains the old stones on the path become slippery, so it is very important to wear shoes with a good tread and perhaps a rubber-tipped cane.
8. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET ILL FROM ALTITUDE SICKNESS?
Don’t worry! All our Guides are trained in case you get sick with this condition. All our Guides carry an oxygen tank and a First Aid Kit, this ensures that you are very well evaluated and cared for, which will allow you to continue with the hike. In addition, all our staff are prepared in case of Emergency. If after being treated, you still feel very bad and cannot continue with the trek, the Guide will make the best decision whether for you to continue or return. For us, our hikers’ Safety and Health always come first.
If you have to go back, don’t worry, there is still the option to meet up with your group, going to the village of Aguas Calientes and from there up to Machu Picchu very early on the 4th day, to meet again with your group at the Entrance Zone for Machu Picchu and not miss the opportunity to tour this site. There will be some additional charges.
9. IF I ALREADY PAID MY FIRST INSTALLMENT AND DECIDE TO CANCEL, WILL I BE REFUNDED?
Unfortunately we will not be able to make any type of refund or date changes for Tours that are paid in Installments. All Pre-Payments of USD $200.00 are non-refundable, nor transferable, since this money will be invested immediately in all the Procedures and Reservations required for the Tour, as well as in the purchase of Permits and Tickets for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. These procedures will be carried out at the Ministry of Culture of Peru (Branch of the Peruvian Government Managing the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu).
We understand that unexpected things happen that are out of your control, but we cannot make exceptions. You can read more about our Change and Cancellation Policies on this link: http://inca-trail.tours/es/terminos-y-condiciones/
10. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF MACHU PICCHU AND THE MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
Our Tour includes the Entrance Ticket to the Archaeological Site of Machu Picchu. This means a guided tour of about 2 hours through the most interesting places of the citadel, which will be led by our Professional Guide.
Now, Machu Picchu Mountain is a large mountain that is next to the Archaeological Site of Machu Picchu (2,400 m.a.s.l./7,900 feet). This hill has an old Inca Trail to reach its top, which is 3,000 meters above sea level. You can do this walk on your own in an average of 3 hours between going up and down. From its top you will have an impressive 360° panoramic view of the entire Urubamba Valley.
As you can see this is an optional path; you can do it after visiting Machu Picchu on the 4th day, since visitors only enter it in the morning; so we will give you an additional Entrance Ticket for this Mountain.
The Entrance price to this Mount is $60.00 dollars, and we recommend to reserve it at the time of booking the Inca Trail, since permits are very limited (only 400 people per day can climb it).
11. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HUAYNA PICCHU MOUNTAIN AND THE MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
- Huayna Picchu Mountain: The hike to the top takes approximately 45 minutes, along the narrow and steep Inca stairs. Once there, you can see the Machu Picchu citadel and its surroundings. This is the famous peak in the background of every iconic photo of Machu Picchu. For its summit, Huayna Picchu is always a top item on most Machu Picchu visitor lists, which means you usually need to book months in advance. Only a limited number of people can hike this mountain each day. Throughout this hike, you will have stunning views of the Machu Picchu ruins. The limited number of tickets is set by the Culture Ministry in Cusco, not by us. This is completely out of our hands unfortunately. Tickets for this mountain are not transferable.
- Machu Picchu Mountain: The walk to its top takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once there, you get a much higher vantage point, enjoying an amazing view of the Machu Picchu Citadel and its surroundings. This hike is a great alternative to Huayna Picchu. Ideal for those who don’t want the hassle of fighting for a ticket, or were unable to obtain one. Technically, permits for Machu Picchu Mountain are also limited to 400 per day, but they rarely sell out. We simply need to reserve when purchasing your entrance tickets. This hike is great because it will also take you high up like Huayna Picchu, which offers great views. This trek has an easier incline (also making it accessible for those who fear the heights of Huayna Picchu), but the path is much longer, making it just as challenging in its own way.
12. DO I NEED TO BRING ADDITIONAL MONEY TO MY TOUR?
Yes, if you want to buy snacks such as cookies, dehydrated fruit, chocolates, etc. or additional drinks such as sodas, beers or an energy beverage, because it is possible to buy these products in small stores in the area for the first 2 days.
In addition, there is the option of taking a hot shower the first day for 10 soles. Also, if you want to buy a souvenir or memories from the trek, there is the Handicraft Market in Aguas Calientes village. There is also the additional option of enjoying the Thermo-medicinal Baths of the village on the 4th day, the Entrance Price is 20 soles. For all this we recommend that you have between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles. You may not need to spend any of this money, but in case of an Emergency, make sure to have enough cash.
13. WILL I HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE SHOWERS DURING THE ROUTE? WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO BATHROOM SERVICES?
Yes, you will be able to take showers in the Campsite Areas:
- 1st Camp (Wayllabamba) – Hot showers available. These are provided in the premises of a local family, who charge 10 Peruvian soles per person.
- 2nd Camp (Pacaymayo) – Very cold showers. We do not recommend taking one here, as it could be dangerous, the place generally has a cold climate and also with a high elevation (3,600 m.a.s.l./11,800 feet).
- 3rd Camp (Winay Wayna) – Cold water showers. Despite this situation, some tourists who arrive here usually take a shower, especially when the day is hot and sunny.
Regarding Bathroom Services, there will be access to them. At the beginning of the hike, in the places where you will have lunch, when you arrive at Machu Picchu and in the Campsite area we find these facilities.
14. WHAT TIME WILL WE RETURN TO CUSCO?
On the last day, after visiting Machu Picchu, we will take a bus for 25 minutes to the village of Aguas Calientes. Then have lunch at a local restaurant and after, a train ride of 1 hour and 45 minutes until the Ollantaytambo Train Station. There a tourist bus will be waiting for a two-hour trip back to Cusco City. We have two train schedules: from 4:20 p.m. or 6:20 p.m. (time to be confirmed depending on Peru Rail availability)

WHY DO TICKETS FOR THE INCA TRAIL RUN OUT SO FAST?
According to the current Regulations for Tourist Use of the Inca Trail 4 days/3 nights, only 500 permits are offered daily for this route; figure in which visitors are counted, as well as all the Service Personnel of Authorized Travel Agencies such as: Guides, Cooks and Porters, so tickets are very limited.
These service personnel are of vital importance for the excursion because thanks to them, you will be supplied with everything needed such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed during the hike; the cook will prepare delicious meals which give the required energy to continue on your way; and the porters will carry everything you need such as: camping equipment, kitchenware, food, products, sleeping items, among others.
So, due to these regulations, the permits required for a group of travelers will need to be always Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
These Regulations for Tourist Use of the area are written and controlled by the Ministry of Culture (branch of the Peruvian Government). The rule is strict and once the 500 permits for each day are sold, there is no option to purchase additional ones.
Now that you know the reason behind the great demand, it is clear the need to reserve your permits as soon as possible, through a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government to operate on the Inca Trail, like ours, Incredible Peru Tours – IPT.
Remember to reserve your Excursion as soon as possible, since permits are sold quickly for this magnificent trek.
