INTRODUCTION
This ancient road to Cachicata en route to Machu Picchu combines beautiful mountainous landscapes with incredible panoramic views, lush forests, a subtropical jungle with splendid natural environment, with the magnificent work of Inca masons, such as the exceptional stone pavement of the road, the beautiful villages, sumptuous temples, agricultural terraces, canals and water fountains, tunnels and incredible archaeological sites, including the famous Sun Gate, from where you can watch the sunset over the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu (one of the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World).
This great tour begins by picking you up at the hotel, which can be in Cusco City or in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to go in our private vehicle to the community of Socma, our Trek Head; along the way we will visit very interesting places!
The Cachicata hike is one of the newest routes offered in the Cusco region. Around the village of Ollantaytambo, the Cachicata trek takes you past towering waterfalls, Inca ruins and beautiful Andean scenery.
The Cachicata hike is relatively easy compared to some others, making it a great option for less experienced hikers. Another great thing about this Trek is that very few people are doing it, so if you want to avoid crowds, this is the tour for you.

Itinerary
DAY 01: CUSCO-SOCMA-RAYAN
We start with an easy first day. Leaving Cusco City early we head towards the Sacred Valley to the Socma village, which is a short distance from Ollantaytambo. Just before arriving in Socma we will stop to take photos of some cave paintings from the Stone Age! Today’s hike takes us into the valley behind Socma as we head to a small Inca remain and a beautiful waterfall found at the top of the valley. Passing through fields cultivated with potatoes, corn and quinoa, we will have the opportunity to see a variety of birds and native plants, learn about the customs of the Andean people. Our guide will teach you a little Quechua (the language of the Incas) so you can communicate with people you meet on the hike. After a relaxing walk we finally arrive at our destination, the Inca complex of Perolniyoc. After a guided tour of the site, we will continue a short distance to our camp in Rayan (3,650 m.a.s.l.), where we stop. In the afternoon we will visit one of the local families and you will be able to practice the Quechua learned in the morning (for everyone’s enjoyment).
Hiking time: 5 hours
Distance to cover: 12 km. / 7.4 miles
Climate: Fresh
Altitudes: From 3,200 m.a.s.l. to 3,650 m.a.s.l.
Accommodation: Camp
DAY 02: RAYAN-CACHICATA QUARRIES
Today is the longest day of the trek. Starting from our camp we will continue through the valley, this is the first stage of the journey. This area is still cultivated by local people despite the high altitudes and we will see them tend their fields. One of the few plants that seems to thrive at this altitude is a species of mint called muña and the smell permeates the air throughout the morning. In total it is around 4 hours of walking towards the Pass (4,440 m a.s.l.) where we will stop, to enjoy the views and catch our breath, before continuing for approximately another 20 minutes and stopping for lunch. Afterwards the walk becomes easier, having reached the top of the mountain the terrain levels off and we cross the plateau through a strange landscape of what appear to be tumuli but are actually glacial piles (superposition of rocks deposited by glaciers during the ice age). Our goal today is the ancient Inca quarry of Cachicata. Descending from the plateau we reach Cachicata (3,820 m.a.s.l.) in the afternoon, passing an Inca ruin that people call the Sun Gate, along the way.
Trekking time: 6 hours.
Distance to travel: 14 km. / 8.7 miles
Climate: Fresh
Altitudes: From 3,650 m.a.s.l. up to 4,440 and descending to 3,820 m.a.s.l.
Accommodation: Camp
DAY 03: CACHICATA-OLLANTAYTAMBO-AGUAS CALIENTES(Village)
Today we focus on exploring Cachicata. Despite the proximity to Ollantaytambo and the wide range of interesting attractions, almost no one comes here. Cachicata is a large place, which was the quarry used by the Incas to build Ollantaytambo and has several points of interest, including large buildings, stones left unfinished and abandoned all over the place, chullpas (funeral houses) and a cave with Inca mummies still there. After a guided tour of the place, we will continue climbing the mountain, following the original platform used to transport the stones to Ollantaytambo and arriving at the village in the afternoon. From Ollantaytambo village we will take the train to Aguas Calientes (2,000 m.a.s.l.), to spend the night in a comfortable hotel, dinner will be in a tourist restaurant and is included. During dinner our guide will provide you with very important information about the next day, so we will be fully prepared to visit Machu Picchu on the last day. Afterwards, it is advisable to sleep at a reasonable time to wake up in the early hours of the morning and arrive at Machu Picchu early.
Hiking time: 3 hours.
Distance to travel: 9 km. / 5.6 miles
Climate: Hot
Altitudes: 3,820 m.a.s.l. down to 2,700 m.a.s.l. (On foot), and then descending to 2,000 m.a.s.l. (By train)

4: AGUAS CALIENTES (VILLAGE)-MACHU PICCHU-CUSCO
We will start our last and incredible day very early to reach Machu Picchu, even before the hikers on the Inca Trail and those who come on tourist trains. We will have the chance to enjoy the sunrise at Machu Picchu. After breakfast we leave the hotel at 5:30 am. and walk to the bus station (2,000 meters above sea level), from there we will board a tourist bus for 30 minutes in a zigzag direction to the Inca sanctuary of Machu Picchu (2,400 meters above sea level). After the tour you will have enough free time to take photos, walk or explore the site on your own and there is the additional chance of climbing the Huayna Picchu mountain, depending on availability. In the afternoon, after enjoying Machu Picchu, we will take a tourist bus, for about 25 minutes to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch in one of the good restaurants in the village. At 6pm. we will board the return train, to take us back to Ollantaytambo village, arriving at 7:50 pm, there our transfer will be waiting for you, to go on tourist bus back to Cusco City, arriving at approximately 9:30 pm and, finally, we leave you at the hotel in Cusco City.
Hiking time: 2 hours with the group to visit Machu Picchu + 4 hours exploring alone.

Tips are not mandatory, there is no exact amount. Only if you wish, at the end of the Tour you will be able to tip the Tour Guide, cook and porters. As you can see, this is something additional and completely voluntary, whatever you consider will be greatly appreciated by the support team.
6. WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE ON THIS ROUTE AND MACHU PICCHU?
The weather is very unpredictable along the Cachicata Trail, it is impossible to say exactly what type of weather you will encounter during the hike. No matter what month you travel for this Trail, make sure you have waterproof clothing on hand, like a good raincoat.
Many people are surprised to learn that the Cachicata Route has a subtropical climate. The route extends through the High Jungle, known as Cloud Forest or Mountain Jungle, which is full of exuberant vegetation with the presence of orchids, ferns, bromeliads and some mosquitoes.
Machu Picchu is located at 2,400 meters above sea level, this is a considerably lower altitude (hotter and wetter) than in Cusco City and many other places. In Machu Picchu the temperature can easily reach 25 degrees Celsius. It is surrounded by taller mountain peaks, often shrouded in fog. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the Spanish never discovered it.
During dry season (April to November), mornings are cloudy and can be cold. As the morning hours pass, the clouds disappear and the sun comes out, so it can be quite warm. Sun protection, insect repellent and a good hat are essential. However, remember that it can sometimes rain in June and be sunny in December.
During rainy season (from mid-November to mid-April), pourings are usual. However, don’t be surprised if some days are sunny this season. February is the month with the most rain, so during this month the Route is closed.
Also consider that when it rains the ancient stones on the path become slippery, so it is very important to wear hiking boots with good grip and perhaps a cane with a rubber tip.
7. WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET ILL WITH ALTITUDE SICKNESS?
Don’t worry! All of our Guides are trained in case you become ill with this problem. They all carry an oxygen tank and a First Aid Kit, this ensures that you are very well looked after, which will allow you to continue the Hike. Furthermore, our entire team is prepared in cases of Emergency. After treatment, if you still feel very unwell and are unable to continue the Trail, the Guide will make the best decision for you: to continue or return. For us, your Safety and Health always come first.
8. IF I HAVE ALREADY PAID MY FIRST INSTALLMENT AND DECIDE TO CANCEL, WILL I BE REFUNDED?
Unfortunately No. We will not be able to provide any type of refund or change dates for Tours that are paid in installments. All Pre-payments of US$200.00 are non-refundable or transferable, as this money will be immediately invested in all Procedures and Reservations necessary to carry out the Tour, as well as in the purchase of licenses and tickets for the Cachicata Route and Machu Picchu. We will carry out these procedures at the Peruvian Ministry of Culture (Peruvian State Organization in charge of the Administration of the Trails and Machu Picchu).
We understand that unexpected things happen that are beyond your control, but cannot make exceptions. You can read more about our Modification and Cancellation Policies on the website: http://incredibleperutours/es/terminos-y-condiciones/
9. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX OF MACHU PICCHU AND THE MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
Our Tour includes the Entrance Ticket to the Machu Picchu Archaeological Complex. This is a guided tour of around 2 hours through its most interesting places, which will be led by our Professional Guide.
Machu Picchu Mountain is a large mountain that is close to the Machu Picchu Archaeological Complex (2,400 meters above sea level). It has an ancient Inca path to access its summit, which is 3,000 meters above sea level. You can do this hike alone in an average of 3 hours between the climb and the descent. From the top you will have an impressive 360° panoramic view of the entire Urubamba Valley.
As you can see, it is an optional route; and if you want, you can do it after visiting Machu Picchu. Therefore, if you decide to go, we will give you an additional entrance ticket to this mountain.
The entry price is US$70.00, and we recommend you buy it when making the reservation for the Cachicata Route, as permits are very limited (only 400 people per day can do this climb).
10. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUAYNA PICCHU MOUNTAIN AND MACHU PICCHU MOUNTAIN?
Huayna Picchu Mountain: Located next to the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, the trek to the top takes approximately 45 minutes, along narrow and steep Inca stairs. Once at the top, you will be able to see the citadel of Machu Picchu and all its surroundings. This is the famous peak that appears in the background of every classic photo of Machu Picchu. For its summit, Huayna Picchu is always first on most Machu Picchu visitor lists, which means you need to book months in advance. Only a limited number of people can climb this mountain every day. Along this hike, you will have stunning views of the Machu Picchu ruins. As you can see, it is an optional route, and if you want, you can do it after visiting Machu Picchu, for you can only enter in the morning. Therefore, if you decide to visit it, we will give you an additional entrance ticket. The limited number of tickets is set by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. The entrance fee to this Mountain is US$70.00, and we recommend you buy it when making the reservation for the Cachicata Trail, as places are very limited (only 400 people per day can climb this Mountain). Tickets for this adventure are non-transferable.
Machu Picchu Mountain: The hike to its summit lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Once at the top you will have a much higher viewpoint with an incredible sight of the Machu Picchu Citadel and its surroundings. This climb is a great alternative to Huayna Picchu. Ideal for those who don’t want the hassle of fighting for a ticket, or who couldn’t get one. Technically, tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain are also limited to 400 per day, but they rarely sell out. Simply reserve them when booking the Tour. This hike is great because it also offers amazing views. It has an easier incline (making it accessible also for those who fear the heights of Huayna Picchu), but the path is much longer, which makes it equally challenging in its own way.
11. DO I NEED TO BRING ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR MY TOUR?
Yes, if you want to buy some snacks like cookies, dried fruits, chocolates, etc. or an additional drink such as soda, beer or energy beverage, as these products can be purchased in small stores.
Furthermore, if you want to buy some souvenirs from the Tour, you can do so at the Aguas Calientes Handicraft Market. There is also an additional option to visit the Thermo-medicinal Baths in this village, the entrance price is 20 soles. For all this, we recommend that you bring between 150 and 300 Peruvian soles. You may not need to spend any of this money, but in case of an emergency, make sure you have enough cash.
12. WHAT TIME DO WE RETURN TO CUSCO?
On the last day, after visiting Machu Picchu, we will take a 25-minute bus to the village of Aguas Calientes. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and then take a 1 hour and 45 minute train journey, arriving at Ollantaytambo Train Station. There, our transport will be waiting to take you on the two-hour journey back to Cusco City. The group will arrive in Cusco City between 7pm and 10:30pm, depending on the train departure time in Aguas Calientes.

WHY ARE TICKETS FOR THE CACHICATA TRAIL SOLD OUT SO FAST?
According to the current Tourist Use Regulations for the Trail, only 500 daily entries are offered for this route, a number in which visitors are counted, as well as all Service Personnel of Authorized Travel Agencies such as: Guides, Cooks and Porters, therefore tickets are very limited.
These service personnel are of vital importance for the tour, because thanks to them you will have everything you need such as: food, accommodation, tents, etc. The guide will keep you safe and informed throughout the hike; the cook will prepare delicious meals that will give you the energy you need to continue on your way; and the porters will carry everything needed such as: camping equipment, cooking equipment, food, products, sleeping items, among others.
Therefore, due to this regulation, tickets required for a group of travelers will always have to be Double (Travelers + Agency Service Personnel).
This area’s Tourist Use Regulation is drawn up and controlled by the Ministry of Culture (division of the Peruvian Government). The rule is strict and, once 500 tickets for each day have been sold, there is no option to purchase additional ones.
Now that you know the reasons for the great demand, the need to book your tickets as soon as possible is clear, through a Tourism Agency Authorized by the Peruvian Government, as is the case with ours, Incredible Peru Tours – IPT .
Remember to book this Tour as soon as possible because tickets sell quickly for this unforgettable hike.
