Choosing the right time of year can make the difference between a comfortable hike and a challenging day affected by the weather. Huchuy Qosqo can be visited throughout the year, but each season offers different trail conditions, scenery, and visitor levels. Understanding these differences will help you plan your tour according to the type of experience you are looking for.

Dry Season: April to October

This is the most recommended time of year for the trek. During these months, rainfall is limited, the skies are generally clear, and the trails remain firm, making both the ascent and the long descent toward the archaeological site easier. Mornings are usually cold, with temperatures close to 32 °F in the higher areas, but the weather warms up quickly once the sun rises. Visibility is excellent, making this season ideal for enjoying the valley and the mountains surrounding the route.

The only disadvantage of this season is the higher number of visitors, especially between June and August, which coincides with summer vacations in the Northern Hemisphere and Cusco’s main festivities. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider traveling in April, May, September, or October, when you can enjoy favorable weather and fewer people on the trails.

Rainy Season: November to March

During these months, the landscape transforms and becomes intensely green, with lush vegetation and ravines filled with water. However, frequent rainfall makes the terrain slippery and muddy, increasing the physical effort required and demanding greater caution during the descents. Rainfall is usually more common in the afternoons, so it is best to begin the hike very early.

January and February are the rainiest months and, for that reason, the least recommended for travelers seeking comfortable hiking conditions. If you decide to hike during this season, bring waterproof clothing, footwear with good traction, and protection for your equipment. In return, you will enjoy nearly empty trails and the natural landscape at its greenest and most vibrant.

Transition Months

April and November serve as transition months between the two main seasons. In April, the ground has usually dried after the rainy season, while the landscape remains green, creating an excellent combination of favorable trail conditions and beautiful scenery. November marks the beginning of the rainy season, with generally stable days and occasional rainfall. Both months offer a good balance between pleasant weather and fewer visitors.

Daily Weather Considerations

Regardless of the season, high-altitude weather can change quickly. You may begin the hike under sunny skies and encounter cold winds or fog in the higher sections. For this reason, we recommend dressing in layers, using sun protection even on cloudy days, and always carrying warm clothing for the highest point of the route, which exceeds 4,300 meters above sea level.

Recommendation

If your priority is hiking in favorable weather and on safer trails, plan your trek between May and September. If you value quiet surroundings and green landscapes more than comfortable trail conditions, the transition months or even the rainy season have their own special appeal. In any case, book your tour in advance during the high season and be prepared for the natural weather changes that occur in mountainous areas.
