- Transfer to the train station (4:00 – 5:00 am): From Cusco, you head to Poroy station (about 20 minutes from downtown) or take a bus to Ollantaytambo (1 hr 45 min), which is the most common station for tourists. The earliest trains usually depart from Ollantaytambo starting around 5:00 am.
- Train to Aguas Calientes (5:00 – 7:30 am): The journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes takes between 1 hr 30 min and 2 hours. The scenery during the trip is already impressive: the train descends through the Sacred Valley and enters the cloud forest.
- Bus from Aguas Calientes to the citadel (7:30 – 8:00 am): Consettur buses wind up the mountain to the entrance of Machu Picchu in about 25 to 30 minutes. Going up early gives you better light and fewer crowds.
- Visit to the Inca citadel (8:00 am – 3:00 pm): With an early arrival, you can have between 4 and 6 hours inside the archaeological site, more than enough time to explore the main circuit at a relaxed pace.

The Machu Picchu entrance ticket is purchased through the official portal of Peru’s Ministry of Culture. Availability is limited by time slot and circuit, and during high season tickets sell out months in advance. There are no same-day ticket sales at the gate.
The train is operated by two companies: Inca Rail and Peru Rail. Both offer departures from Ollantaytambo and from Poroy station in Cusco. The earliest trains are booked first, so the earlier you reserve, the better the schedule you will have available.
The bus to the citadel does not require advance booking: it is purchased at the ticket office in Aguas Calientes the same day. However, during high season the line can be long, so arriving early in town gives you an advantage.
